In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books…so, I have been doing a lot of reading but not of any books.
Permanent Reading List:
The Valley of Fear by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Go Tell It On the Mountain by James Baldwin
I am reading:
Epidemics and Society: From the Black Death to the Present by Frank M. Snowden- Basically, this is a study of the societies in which epidemics and pandemics have taken hold and an account of how those epidemics changed those societies. Now in the forst couple of chapters which deals with the best known medical doctors of antiquity, Hippocrates and Galen. Of course, reading about Hippocrates sent me down a rabbit hole of a paper (now that JSTOR has eased their access rules!) of the apocryphal story of how Hippocraes eradicated plague in Athens with fire (which is actually an interesting story in itself)...but basically, the initial chapters cover the humoral theory of disease which would dominate Western medicine well in to the 18th century. And...I learned about...this!
Before Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas
Genet: A Biography by Edmund White
The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison by Ralph Ellison (edited by John F. Callahan and Marc C. Connor)
