March 2020
Pacific Northwest
In 2017 I learned about an eagle nest visible from a back road near my home and watched the tail end of that year’s season. The following year I kept an eye on it from January nestorations right through the fledging of the one eaglet. Last year however the nest wasn’t used — I figured the iffy status of the tree and loss of nest structure after winter storms had caused the eagles to abandon it. It was sad to see the nest empty all season.
This year though they have been near or in the nest fairly often. We’ve been cautiously hopeful.
One exciting day we saw both eagles in the nest. And one of them appeared to be checking out something below. An egg maybe??
In the PNW, eggs should be laid by now and incubation in progress, which means somebody in the nest at all times, so it’s been worrisome to see what appears to be an empty nest.
I pulled over and stepped out of the car to see not through the window. To my delight, a head popped up. Yes! Somebody’s in there, just not visible over the edge from this distance.
The eagle disappeared from view immediately. This pair is accustomed to traffic going by intermittently but perhaps it was just checking me out visibly.
We don’t go out driving much these days, limiting our exposure in the village (grocery pickup at the door now we can order/pay online), but when we do, we for sure swing by the nest to see what’s going on. No certainty but it’s looking hopeful.
We live in a rural area, so it’s possible to be out of the house and keep a distance from humans. I don’t know what I’d do without my daily walkies — nature and fresh air. Thankful I can go out and not be anywhere near other people.

Cloudy today in the PNW islands. Dry. Temps in 40s.
What’s up in nature in your area today?
