50 years ago yesterday I was discharged from The Army. My tour consisted of:
- Fort Lewis — basic training
- Fort Mother Rucker, AL — Aircraft maintenance school (UH 1 helicopters, Hueys)
- Hunter Army Airfield — Savanna, GA. Permanent station where i got my first ship, a brand new UH-1H model. I was a bad boy and my next stop was
- Bien Hoa Air Force base RVN.
- Back to Fort Mother Rucker, AL
The great SE adventure.
Not going to get into a bunch of stories because they would all be similar to every other stupid shit that happens in the military except to say instead of being a crew chief on a Huey (2nd door gunner) I ended up as a crew chief on a AH-1 Cobra which meant I did not have to fly any combat missions. And I thank whatever mysterious force kept me out of that side seat every day.
Also Alabama was a shit hole, Savanna, Ga was a pretty nice town in places and Viet Nam was interesting say the least.
