In 2002, I was the sole "no" vote on the invasion of Iraq. I stood alone, and I thought I would be put out to pasture. Still, I made my decision, and I was right.
All and all, I know a thing or two about speaking truth to power.
Today, Captain Brett Crozier was relieved of command for doing the right thing — for sounding the alarm about coronavirus and trying to protect those aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
It is wrong to chastise our leaders; we should commend them. I stand with you, Captain.
We knew this already, but this crisis makes it even more apparent: we desperately need a change of leadership in Washington. Joni Ernst and Donald Trump are not up to the task of keeping Iowans safe, and Joni lacks the leadership to defend Captain Crozier and others on the front line.
Iowans and Americans need leadership — a steady, experienced hand at the tiller. If you agree, I ask that you send what you can to my campaign. I’ll always defend those in the breach, because I know what it’s like to stand there.
UPDATE: Captain Crozier got the hero’s goodbye he deserved.
UPDATE 2: We just learned that Captain Crozier tested positive for the coronavirus.
Now more than ever, we need to implement his guidelines.
