In a few minutes, Senator Bernie Sanders will announce the suspension of his campaign.
The decision to drop out of the 2020 race comes at a time when our country is struggling to find a solid path forward as President Donald Trump’s continued butchering of the COVID-19 handling has put Americans at risk, deceived American citizens, and devalued our nation.
His exit also gives the Democratic Party an opportunity to talk about why in times of crisis, we look to help the nation FIRST, rather than self-promotion.
This morning, Donald J. Trump compared his press conferences as a matter of ratings.
He’s more concerned about how he appears in front of the country for popularity in the ratings in comparison to TV shows than he is in comparison to lives at risk and the loss of life already occuring.
At the same time, Democratic candidates are taking this moment to look at how to strengthen our nation, to think about how we could hold a Democratic Convention with the backdrop of such loss, and to build support in the nation for a real discussion about how a president should react in times of crisis.
Going into the fall, we have to be willing to consider radical changes to our convention — I believe it should be suspended, and that each state should be connected virtually with some procedure. It is too difficult to ask people to fly and be in a major location so quickly after (or maybe even during) a pandemic.
The campaign for the fall of 2020 officially begins today.
