We all heard Barack Obama endorse Joe Biden. His speech was a most timely and well-delivered balm after passing the Easter mark that Trump had once set to #OpenAmerica!
Then this tweet went viral:
I don’t know about you, but Obama, using some of the same lo-fi social media still managed to deliver an endorsement speech with more gravitas than anything we’ve seen from the White House since he left. And since the coronavirus pandemic, there has been no better commanding figure who took the elephant in the room, named it, put it in its place, and gave us a better view of ourselves. (No slight to Gov. Cuomo).
Much of that breath of fresh air was compressed into his opening statements
Let me start by saying the obvious: These aren’t normal times. As we all manage our way through a pandemic unlike anything we have seen in a century, Michelle and I hope that you and your families are safe and well.
Simple and yet stunning. We had never heard “President” Trump say anything resembling that. It was refreshing to hear unvarnished truth without defensiveness or petulance. If you haven’t seen it yet (it happens), you should see the full video here.
Instead, we’ve been subjected to Trump’s long-winded attempts to turn press conferences on the pandemic into free propaganda pitches. Or these rallies to praise Trump revolve around his favorite m.o. of blaming everyone else and taking zero responsibility.
Quite frankly, I could use more of #Obama speaking nationally. We should hear what he says to America’s future and the families that are raising them. I welcome hearing him remind us that nobody got to where they are without teachers, parents, grandparents and a whole host of other opportunities, people, and help.
No one would be more proud or more grateful to see America’s Class of 2020 succeed. We need to remember and be reminded not just for the Class of 2020, but for the America that once had such class and grace. We can have that in our future and again in the White House.
