If you read my diaries at all, one thing should be obvious...I am not your normal American… whatever that is.
Being Jewish and Gay I have always felt like an outsider, although I have experienced directly both anti-Jewish and anti-gay biases, I have become stronger I would like to think, because of them.
One way I am different is in my appreciation of food. If I have one major weakness it is food. The expression that the way to a man’s heart is thru his stomach is very true with me.
I sometimes think I am the only person who does not like Italian food… or what is called Italian food here in the states. I would readily admit I do not know much about Italian food in Italy but I would guess it is not the same in both places.
I base this on my appreciation of Chinese food. I do not like Chinese American food, but I love Chinese Chinese food. A funny example of this is when I took my ex, he was from Malaysia and is Chinese, to his first American Chinese restaurant. I had to explain to him what each food was...I laughed when I was at a loss in trying to explain how corn nuggets somehow qualified as Chinese food.
For me, nothing is better than most Asian foods. 4 of my 5 top choices of food are from regions or countries in Asia.
First would be Vietnamese, then Japanese, then Filipino, then Chinese food and lastly Mexican food though this would be of the Tex-Mex variety...which I am sure is not based in reality of true Mexican food.
I think one of the reasons I love the multiple Asian foods as I do is in part due to the experiences I had in eating the food. For example most of, for a long period of my life, boyfriends and friends were Filipino. I used to go to parties where I was the only non Filipino present. I loved the atmosphere, the food, the culture.
Anyway, I am sure by now you are bored to death of me talking about me...so please talk about yourself in the comments section.
What foods from other cultures/countries is your favorite? Why? Any specific foods?
