Intellectually, I’m convinced the Blue Tsunami is building, but I have to confess I was getting a bit nervous recently as Trump’s approval ratings reached their highest levels since early 2017. A short-term, reflexive turn towards “leadership” by low-information respondents during a crisis, I hoped. Now, that hope is being borne out. See projects.fivethirtyeight.com/… It’s pretty much back down to its usual level of about negative 8%. With two meaningful exceptions, Trump’s net approval is now the lowest of any President (starting with Truman, when such polling began), measured this close to an election for which an incumbent would stand. Lower than Truman, to the extent one can put any weight on that sparse and early-craft polling. Lower than Ford ever got during his short term. The exceptions? He’s just about tied with Bush 41 and Carter. They both lost.
