Mullein has been a plant used medicinally for thousands of years. The most common use of the fresh leaves was as toilet paper, but also as a bandage for large wounds. It is widely known as a remedy for respiratory ailments. The treatment involved setting the dried plant on fire and inhaling the smoke. This should not be confused with “rolling your own” (though that did become a better delivery system). A small fire was lit in a contained area, the leaves burned and the air would fill with smoke. After inhaling the smoke, the ill person would usually hack and spit up all the bad contents in their lungs. “If it don’t kill you, it can cure you”.

All the trees in Mississippi have leaves now. The shades and shapes seem endless. I didn’t want to give a lecture on each and every plant but wanted you to see the variety of leaves in my small acre and a half of Eden.
This is just a sample of the trees in my small plot of soil. I didn’t get to the Persimmon, Flowering and English Dogwood, American Holly, Eastern Red Cedar, Black Cherry, Pines, or shrubs-bushes like Privet and Blueberries.
Most of you know I have been taking a lot of bird photos during my self-imposed social exile. I see birds everywhere, even when they are not birds. Imagine my excitement when I saw this.
The Fall colors attract most of the attention where leaves are concerned. But, Spring brings the fresh green of life to the trees and us. A large amount of oxygen we breath is processed through leaves and for that I am also thankful.
I hope you enjoy the leaves in your area. Thanks for visiting with me today. My bug of the day adds a splash of color to the various shades of green. It has the same name as a southern shrub.
