Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post, from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and
share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
This series was conceived as a haven where folks can drop in to share conversation, ideas, weather reports, and music. Feel free to leave a note, comment, picture, or tune. As always the diarist gets to sleep in, and may show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.
Pull up a chair, get your cup of tea, coffee, or other favorite morning beverage and join us for a neighborly start to the day ahead.
I am drained this morning. Writing and tending to the story I posted last night has sucked a great deal of my energy. We need rest and calm this Sunday morning. My professional career was greatly influenced by several good teachers. One was Dr. Albert Ellis, who was himself influenced by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus.
Some of his observations:
“He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.”
“People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them.”
“Be careful to leave your children well instructed rather than rich, for the hopes of the instructed are better than the wealth of the ignorant.”
“If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.”
“The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.”
“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.”
Living in the mountains, I feel uplifted by the great massifs surrounding me. For it is there that I find peace. When I am on top of one of our mountains, I get the same feeling I get sitting quietly and alone in a great cathedral.
