It looks like the Brazilian version of Trump, who many have characterized as even more deranged than the original in his insanely idiotic response to the Covid-19 pandemic now sweeping his country (though to be fair and balanced, at least he hasn't told his fellow citizens to try drinking bleach -- yet!), may be the first world leader to fall victim to the virus. No, not physically like Boris Johnson in the UK, who is still recovering from his brush with mortality, but politically:
An article in the NYT today A Perfect Storm in Brazil outlines the myriad missteps this bozo has made in just the past week:
Apr 16 -- Bolsonaro fires his popular health minister for proposing the type of strict quarantine measures needed for slowing the spread of the virus.
Apr 23 -- Bolsonaro fires head of national police for refusing to give him a heads up into corruption charges involving his own sons, and appoints an old crony in his place.
Apr 24 -- Justice minister Moro, the most popular and politically powerful member of the government refuses to play along, resigns and denounces Bolsonaro in a blistering speech calling for his impeachment. Bolsonaro responds with a truly Trumpian tirade against his former allies, including his own Attorney General who found it necessary to petition their Supreme Court to initiate said impeachment proceedings.
Brazil has already recorded over 50,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 4,000 deaths thus far and is currently accumulating 3,000-5,000 new cases and 300-400 new deaths each and every day. While these numbers may seem far less serious than the US catastrophe currently unfolding, they've already brought the Brazilian health care infrastructure to the point of collapse, and more ominously, their numbers are still growing exponentially.
I don't see how Bolsonaro even survives a week at this point, since unlike Trump yet, his support had already cratered into the upper 20's even before this latest self-inflicted gut shot; and it looks like his last line of support among the military may also be crumbling.
