I listen to a lot of internet radio, mostly jazz, but other things too. My favorite station is KCSM out of the College of San Mateo. “The Bay Area’s Jazz Station” has live DJs, some of them KJAZ alumni and a big collection. From their website:
KCSM is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, the fifth largest radio market in the United States with the potential of reaching an audience of more than 6 million people. KCSM Jazz 91 broadcasts 24 hours a day and has a growing audience that currently numbers more than 200,000. According to Arbitron, the station is among the top 35 "most listened to" non-commercial stations in the United States.* An affiliate of Public Radio International and National Public Radio, KCSM is the only station in the Bay Area with a 24-hour jazz format. Hosts of the various programs KCSM produces include veteran jazz musicians, educators, and seasoned jazz broadcasters who are often a combination of all three.
They’ve had to lean on prerecorded stuff lately due to COVID cutbacks but have kept daytime hours and their locally produced Sunday shows. Their playlist will give you an idea of what they play.
When I’m in the mood for something electronic I head over to SOMA.fm and choose from one of their 30-plus channels. Groove Salad, Space Station SOMA and Drone Zone are my favorites.
Eclectic and European is FIP, out of France.
My musical comfort food is 70s progressive rock and the Grateful Dead. For my prog fix it’s Aural Moon, the “Net’s Progressive Rock Garden.” They don’t just play the hits, they dig deep with a huge playlist that can play 24/7 for over 400 days without repeating.
For the Dead, it’s gdradio.net, streaming live shows from all eras of the band’s history.
When I can’t make my mind up, I go over to Radio Paradise.
If you have any favorites, lay ‘em on me. I’m always looking for new music.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
