Some big news today out of Texas:
Donald Trump and Joe Biden are in a dead heat in the race for Texas, signaling that the Lone Star State is evolving into a presidential battleground.
A new Dallas Morning News/University of Texas at Tyler poll shows that Trump and Biden are backed by 43% of poll respondents, with 5% opting for “other” candidates and only 9% undecided. Trump’s overall approval rating was 45%.
A February survey had Trump with a one-point lead over Biden, with 11% choosing neither.
The poll of 1,183 registered voters was conducted April 18-27 with a margin of error of +/- 2.85 percentage points. The survey asked additional questions of 447 registered voters who indicated they voted in the Democratic primary, with a margin of error of +/- 4.64%.
The new poll suggests that with a significant investment from Biden and national Democrats, Texas could become a swing state where Trump has to pour in resources to defend.
The poll also shows Trump’s approval rating on handling the coronavirus at 43/44 and he’s evenly split, 45/45, on whether voters trust him to keep them safe. Independent voters support Biden 43-28.
The poll also tested the U.S. Senate race and MJ Hegar (D. TX) is beating Royce West (D. TX) 32-16 with a ton of undecided. Hegar is leading thanks to 31% of women voters and 27% of Hispanic supporters whereas West gets his support from black voters where he leads Hegar 30-19. In head to head match ups against U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R. TX), Cornyn leads by double-digits but that’s also due to a large number of undecideds:
Cornyn vs. Hegar: 37-24, 34% undecided
Cornyn vs. West:35-24, 34% undecided
The Texas Senate runoff is July 14th. Still plenty of time to build op name recognition. but I say we keep up the momentum in Texas. Click below to donate and get involved with Biden, hegar and Royce’s campaigns:
