Hello Peeps, welcome to our little corner of Woozleville. Yes, it’s Woozle Wednesday, that day of the week when the PWBP Pooties take the day off and the pooches come to the rescue and take up the slack — well, those that are trained not to pull on their leashes. Don’t worry, pootie lovers, the kitties insist on making an appearance even though it is supposed to be their day off. They just can’t help putting in their two meows worth. Other critters like birdeez, farm animals, and sometimes wild creatures, will also make appearances from time to time.
Rocking Chair Porch Days of Early Summer in Woozleville
Here in Woozleville South, the sun may not be shining as much as we hope but the truly oppressive weather has yet to make an appearance. Days have been warm but comfortable with some cooler evening breezes — still a bit of Spring hanging on into late May, which is a rarity for us. And what does good weather in the South mean? Sittin’ out on the porch.
“Rocking chair front porches” are a staple of the South, old and new. From tiny mill cottage front stoops to the two-story porches of ante-bellum plantation house to grand wrap-around porches of Victorian mansions, almost every house in the South boasts a porch of some kind. Even 1970s ranch houses boast traditional porches. And the few houses that don’t certainly envy their neighbors.
Backyard decks and patios are for family barbecues. But the front porch is a communal affair. Think To Kill a Mockingbird, as old Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose observed and critiqued the comings and goings of the whole neighborhood from the vantage of her front porch. The front porch in walkable neighborhoods like mine (the Peep who helps the woozles type their weekly diary) are vehicles of social cohesion. Neighbors (even strangers) walking by nod and wave, some stop to chat and the favored few even stop for a refreshing glass of iced tea.
Yes, the front porch is a great institution, and the woozles of Woozleville concur. Sociable pooches enjoying meeting and greeting their neighbors of all species. They watch for their doggie buddies to walk by. The front porch is the perfect place to wait for the friendly mailman or their favorite UPS driver. The pooties especially love casting a critical superior eye on all they survey. Other species enjoy the cool shade of a porch as well. All the critters appreciate a comfy cushion and fresh water bowl on their porch as well. Even wild birds, especially finches and wrens, will find respite on a quiet porch and some will even build a nest or roost for the night.
So tonight, the woozles have compiled some of their favorite porch memes and images. Enjoy! But before we settle with a good book on our Woozleville porches below the fold, the Town Parliamentarian will make sure that the Rulz are prominently posted, per our arrangement with the venue’s Management:
