My family and I are white. We live in a mostly white, suburban neighborhood. My friends and co-workers are mostly white.
In the past I’ve told myself that I don’t contribute to racism in America because I’m not outwardly racist and because I donate and vote for progressive candidates. But I understand now – and I regret not understanding it sooner – that not being outwardly racist isn’t good enough.
How do I seek out the knowledge/experience/perspective that would help me begin to actually understand the realities that people of color face in our society, from which my white privilege has sheltered me? If you taught “Institutional Racism in America 101” what would be on the syllabus?
What sources do you recommend for learning more about black culture and history in America?
How do I get out of my bubble and begin truly seeing things the way they are?
