[UPDATE
These are in fact two separate incidents from the same night. Shader’s actions were done alone and she is not an attorney. Apologies.]
Er, well here’s a face of the protests we weren’t expecting!
NBC4 NY:
Samantha Shader, 27, of Catskill, New York was charged with allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at an NYPD vehicle that was occupied by four police officers.
According to the charging documents, Shader allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at 1:12 a.m. in Brooklyn Saturday morning. The FBI says that shattered two windows of the NYPD vehicle and caused damage to the vehicle while officers were inside. The complaint says that the FBI was able to get video of the incident from a witness.
Two attorneys for have been arrested for torching an NYPD car while officers were still inside.
Colinford Mattis:
NY Law Journal:
In addition, Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman [female], 31, of Brooklyn, face charges of being in possession of explosive device components after Rahman had allegedly tossed a Molotov cocktail at an NYPD vehicle before fleeing with Mattis.
He’s accused of driving a van while passenger Urooj Rahman, 31, who is also registered as an attorney in New York state, threw a Molotov cocktail during protests related to the May 25 killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.
Mattis is an attorney for the prestigious Pryor Cashman LLP, whose website declares:
We bring our insights and experience to our clients and the media around the globe. Our full-service capabilities and innovative approach to lawyering have been recognized by independent legal ranking organizations, industry publications and our peers year after year.
I’m guessing when they say “Full service” and “innovative approach to lawyering”, this is NOT what they had in mind.
This is not the kind of legal defense the black community needs.
Two attorneys in a van, throwing Molotov cocktails at NYPD, probably not realizing there were officers inside and now may face attempted murder charges and a separate incident of a young woman attempting the same.
*Sigh*
Hopefully it’s starting to sink that we have some folks hijacking the protests, for whatever the reasons may be, in order to cause destruction and chaos. It’s important that we look to the leaders of the communities protesting as well as national black leadership for guidance in how to properly respond. It’s also important that we call out those taking action that will only set us back as a nation, not move us forward.
That said, gonna need more Apocalypse2020 Bingo cards, cause mine’s getting full.
