Protecting Eyes from Rubber Bullets:
Rubber bullets are bullets/projectiles coated in rubber. Often used to stop riots and disperse crowds. People shot in the head near eyes with rubber bullets will likely suffer an orbital fracture. Over half of people with eye damage from rubber bullets will not regain vision. It is very likely that even with surgery, your vision will be compromised forever.
"Rubber bullets" are not made of rubber. They are jacketed in it but they have a metal core and they can kill you stone dead. Often they are steel-cored 12 gauge shotgun slugs, people have lost whole limbs to them.
Gear/Eyewear:
Ballistic grade goggles and glasses are the safest option to protect against eye damage. Safety glasses that protect against work hazards have not been tested to protect against debris/projectiles like rubber bullets in combat environments. Ballistic grade goggles and glasses are the best choice, please pair with an anti fog coating to maintain clarity of vision, especially in hot humid weather. Try to find ballistic/shatterproof goggles with air tight seals to minimize effects of tear gas. Many ballistic goggles with foam padding will not fully block out tear gas. Straps attached to goggles are also something to consider, to keep them in place.

LRAD NOTES:
An LRAD, is a long range acoustic device, used by the military and police. They are sonic weapons used to control crowds and can cause irreparable hearing damage or physical pain, including nausea.
Figure 1:
There are 4 ways to protect yourself from LRADs
- Increase distance from you and the weapon
- The cone of fire is approximately 30 degrees - running perpendicular to the source is more effective than running away.
- Find a way to block sound pressure waves
- Find a way to absorb or reduce the force of the weapon through other materials
- Destroy the LRAD: fragile!
Some potentially helpful materials for blocking/absorbing sound waves note: MIlitary grade LRADS are dangerous and designed to be able to travel through barriers. Earplugs and other auditory barriers are not completely effective but MAY help with preventing permanent hearing loss.
- Noise barrier fencing
- Acoustic blankets
- Sound panels
- Home insulation
- Spray insulation ( DO NOT SPRAY INSULATION ON YOURSELF)

TEAR GAS GUIDE:
CLEANING GUIDE
- -Remove contaminated clothing ASAP
- -Use a 50/50 mix of any NONFLAVORED ANTACID and COLD WATER
- Baking soda is a common antacid.
- -LIGHT SALINE SOLUTION, same consistency you might find in IV bags.
- Both solutions are safe for eyes, pour over nasal bridge NOT THE FOREHEAD
- For the body a COLD SHOWER and any strong DETERGENT will suffice, DISH SOAP is highly effective, or a mixture of BAKING SODA and COLD WATER if unable to take a shower. BABY SHAMPOO is also effective for cleaning the eyes.
PLATE/BODY ARMOR Guide:
https://www.securityprousa.com/blogs/news/nij-ballistic-levels
https://www.ar500armor.com/ar500-armor-body-armor/level-iv-body-armor.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwztL2BRATEiwAvnALcmMyayyuDjKy9-PmKJZgePvhgyWyRhxbTrWTRkogNn5SH4fxx4u77RoCz04QAvD_BwE
- When buying plates always go for AR500 steel, it's the most effective and reliable, level 3+ AR500 ranges in price from $60 to $120 and is rated to stop even .308 jacketed rounds, which is stronger than anything the police carry.
- Level IV plates will stop a .308 round which will be used to engage at distances over 400 yards; these are the only plates that will stop military grade rifle rounds.
- Level IIIA Plates will stop all pistol-caliber rounds
- Most active military use 5.56 NATO rounds as their general carry. They are effective up to around 300 yards, should be stopped by level IV plates but CAN PENETRATE at close range
- Rothco, Voodoo Tactical, Blackhawk and Condor all have carriers within the $50 range
- Duct tape plates as a last resort. Carriers are your best option.
- Most gun stores should sell plate carriers
What to do if you are getting shot at:
- WHERE TO SEEK COVER FROM GUNFIRE
- DO NOT get behind anything made of wood, plastic, basically anything not made of thick metal or concrete
- IF SHELTERING BEHIND A CAR: Shelter either behind the trunk or in front of the engine, .308 and 5.56 rounds will not penetrate all the way through the vehicle
- Most construction equipment will be thick enough to stop bullets
- If you are taking cover behind concrete keep away from the edges, they will break off, most concrete barricades will be destroyed by consistent automatic gunfire in around four minutes
- If running: run in a serpentine motion to keep the shooter from sighting in on your position
- MOVING COVER TO COVER: wait for a break in the gunfire, this typically means that they are reloading, average reload time for an M4A1 assault rifle by a trained soldier is about two seconds so MOVE. HAVE WHERE YOU ARE MOVING PLANNED OUT AHEAD OF TIME
- In body armor plates: You will likely be knocked down if it is a pistol round and it will HURT. Move if you can or get support. FALL BACK IF YOU ARE INJURED.
- Anywhere else: GET BACKUP AND GET TO A HOSPITAL. Stuff the wound with a shirt, socks, etc and APPLY PRESSURE. A belt, torn clothing, or even rope can be used as a tourniquet. Use a solid object as a tension rod to twist tourniquet as tight as you possibly can. SEEK SHELTER AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ASAP. Alcohol 40 proof and over can be used as disinfectant for the wound.
- If there is an exit wound: The bullet has penetrated and left your body, you will need pressure applied from both sides to staunch bleeding
- If there is no exit wound: The bullet has not left your body, THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE YOU A LOT OF PAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE BULLET. Apply pressure to the wound and move to safety. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
HOW TO ASSIST SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN SHOT:
- Stuff the entry site with anything that can absorb blood, all of your clothing will work to stuff the wound
- APPLY PRESSURE TO STAUNCH BLEEDING
- Alcohol will disinfect a wound, salt (WHILE EXTREMELY PAINFUL) can help stop bleeding. The wounded will likely not be happy with you as this obviously hurts, but it will help stop bleeding. WARNING: If using salt and wounded is hit in a vital area IE the chest, victim may go into shock. SEEK MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY.
- If shot on a limb, APPLY A TOURNIQUET AS TIGHT AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. CUT OFF CIRCULATION TO THE LIMB. A belt or ripped piece of clothing will work well.
- If shot in torso: FIRST MOVE THE VICTIM TO A SAFE PLACE, THEN STUFF WOUND AND APPLY PRESSURE
- If shot in head or neck, nothing can be done unless you are literally standing in front of a hospital. Get yourself to safety.
