Probably the best column Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post has written. That I’ve read anyway. A rant I was ready to read.
She’s is unequivocal- the entire GOP has full responsibility for “the serial failures, outrages and perversions of this administration.”
Referring specifically to yesterdays events she points to the immediate actors-
...Those who enabled and participated — including Attorney General William P. Barr, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, Ivanka Trump and federal police, to name a few — are equally to blame for the debasement of the presidency and a house of worship.
but to her point- they are the tip of the iceberg… (my bolding)
Too often we let off those without whom Trump would have been deterred if not defanged. Let’s start with those who have served in this administration. All of them. There are no “good” servants of a racist, wannabe dictator. Former Defense secretary Jim Mattis is as culpable as former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. They cannot escape responsibility for their role in creating a patina of normalcy, enabling Trump or lying on his behalf. The anonymous New York Times writer who deluded himself or herself into believing that working for Trump served some noble purpose is no better than Stephen Miller, the architect of inhumane immigration policies.
Quoting Rep Adam Schiff ,and referring to the 23 Senate Republican incumbents she states what all of us firmly believe ( and hope to hell happens) “Every last one of them should be booted out and have his or her name “tied to his with a cord of steel and for all of history,”
Ms. Rubin leaves no one out of the purge she clearly believes should happen. I appreciate that she points to the governors’ houses and state legislatures as well as all the bastards in Washington. But she adds...
The rest? At the very least we should not treat former officials as respected reservoirs of historical or political wisdom. No cushy university perches. No participation in panels of esteemed former officials. Private employers should be wary of hiring people of such low character. Yes, serving in an administration so corrupt, racist, dishonest and anti-democratic should deprive one of the benefits ex-officials of other administrations enjoy.
Also pointing to mainstream and social media’s responsibility and the need for serious reflection in their aiding an abetting of this monster- saying, among other things- they need to call lies, craziness and racism what they are. And no one- including the hateful squatter in the White House (or an actual, legitimate president) should be “entitled” to use them to “incite violence, perpetrate election fraud or engage in racial or religious hate speech.”
Everyone of them is responsible. Everyone of them needs to be called to account.
But you knew that already, some people don’t.
