I didn’t see any blog on this report, so here goes.
In yet another ‘scared cop’ killing, a young man dies because police are too afraid to learn the facts before shooting. Police in Vallejo, California, responded to a report of possible looting but the looters had left before they arrived. However, suspected looters returned some time later. Police observed the victim in front of a Walgreens and reported that he began running toward a vehicle in the parking lot when he saw the police arriving. Apparently thinking better of attempting to escape, Sean Monterossa, age 22, stopped and knelt down with his hands out to the side. Vallejo Police Chief Shawny Williams said the officer believed he saw the butt of a handgun poking out near Monterrosa’s waist, and opened fire “due to this perceived threat.” The officer felt so threatened by the kneeling man, that he fired 5 shots through his own windshield, one of which killed Monterossa. The man was surrendering, with his hands out, on his knees no less!
The supposed butt of a hand gun turned out to be the handle of a hammer. California does allow open carry or even concealed carry of hand guns if the person obtains the proper license or permit. Shooting a man for possibly having a legal hand gun in his waistband should alarm all the 2nd Amendment gun lovers. As a permit holder myself I am extremely fearful, but then again I am a white guy, so I guess I have less to fear than a handsome young Latino man with a hammer in his pocket.
Killing a man for possibly have a legal hand gun is outright murder. But I don’t yet see any gun rights people being outraged by the assassination of another brown skinned kid. Shame!
