The best antidote to hot takes is hard data, and the latest Daily Kos/Civiqs poll is here with your cure. This survey of 1,368 adults was conducted online from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 and reveals that only 17% of Americans think that school reopenings in their area are going smoothly. Of the 62% who say reopenings are not going well, fully half do not think things will improve. Most Americans (58%) think the U.S. is handling the coronavirus pandemic worse than governments in other countries, and 57% believe the government should have done more to respond to the coronavirus outbreak when it began in the spring.
Other noteworthy findings in this month’s poll include:
- 53% of Americans think the coronavirus outbreak in the United States has been more serious than in other countries.
- 53% of Americans think the Trump administration is deliberately trying to disrupt the U.S. Postal Service.
- 61% of Republicans plan to vote in person on Election Day in November, while just 20% of Democrats do.
- Strong majorities of Americans see kneeling during the national anthem (55%) and refusing to play professional sports (60%) as acceptable forms of protesting police violence.
- If a coronavirus vaccine becomes available, 31% of Americans do not plan to take it.
- 44% of Americans believe it will take six months or more for the coronavirus outbreak to settle down and for things in the United States to get back to normal; 27% of Americans believe that things will never get back to normal.
Additional issues surveyed include belief in the QAnon conspiracy theory and Fox News and MSNBC viewership.
This poll’s numbers provide hard evidence that not only are Americans holding Trump responsible for disrupting the post office and failing in the government’s response to COVID-19, but also that Americans support athletes’ recent and ongoing acts of protest.
