The Washington Post, notwithstanding its other failings (i.e. supporting the Iraq war), has done yeoman's work in continuing to publicize the sick underlying facts about how the United States, under the leadership of George W. Bush, sanctioned and carried out the torture of Afghanis and Iraqis in captivity. Today, they published yet another Op-Ed decrying the acts of torture and the lies (they used the less acrimonious term "whitewash") and the liars ("whitewashers") who told them to cover up this ONGOING nightmare of epic proportions. (The torture memo Gonzales wrote and accompanying Executive Orders are still the official policy of the United States.)
War Crimes
This is catastrophic. This is Evil Empire stuff. We must take a stand on this, and it starts with opposing the nomination of the guy who gave torture his blessing: Alberto "Abu Ghraib" Gonzales.
The first step is getting the Democratic Senators revved up for the hearings. The second is persuading them to filibuster. As I have written in another diary, military men are gathering to oppose the Gonzalez nomination:
Military Men Oppose Gonzales
As a matter of civil rights, human rights, national integrity, national security and long-term international credibility we must stop the Gonzales nomination.
This will not be an easy fight. However, it is not impossible. Think about it, Kerik had to withdraw because of a nanny problem. Meanwhile, the man who sanctioned torture is sitting pretty waiting to be your next Attorney General? C'mon Kossacks!!
We are putting a website together to oppose the nomination. Please comment below if you would like to help out.
