Democrats may have made history Friday, fielding no candidate to challenge Republican Mike Crapo in the U.S. Senate. A Democrat missed the filing deadline by a few seconds, leaving Crapo unopposed in his bid for a second six-year term.
Democrats did try to put up a candidate to run against Crapo, who has already banked $1.5 million toward his re-election bid, but former state Sen. John Peavey backed out at the last minute, party officials said.
Democratic campaign organizer Shauneen Grange, who works for Boise Mayor Dave Bieter, raced into Secretary of State Ben Ysursa´s office Friday with papers from Coeur d´Alene candidate Michael Kennedy in one hand, her shoes in the other. But she missed the 5 p.m. deadline by seconds.
Crapo still could face an opponent, however. A candidate would have to file papers with the secretary of state by May 11 and get 1,000 write-in votes in the primary election to have his or her name on the general election ballot
