This week I have a
scoop for everyone. I will be kind enough to put it above my
editorial on “A fascist, A theocrat, and I, How we can live in
the same house, Country, and World.” But I will make you
go to the extended entry to find the “Scoop.”
Let
me list a few others who have used comparisons to fascism to let you
all know that we are not alone in the fight.
Robert
Kennedy Jr.
Scott
McConnell, The American Conservative.
Aldo
Vadali, Italian documentary film director, publisher, political
and environmental activist,
Fritz
Stern, leading scholar of European history,
Llewellyn
H. Rockwell, Jr. Libertarian Author and President of
Ludwig von Mises Institute,
Bishop
Desmond Tutu, Former South African President, you know the
rest.
Rep.
Ron Paul, R-Tx-43rdCD.
I just discovered The
Crisis Paper which deserves a lot more attention. The page cited
has an excellent list of papers on American Fascism.
Diaries
:: Tomtech's diary ::
These are the main Diaries, with
commentary, from the last few days that relate, in my opinion, to the
possibility that this country is becoming a Corporate Nationalistic
Anti-Communistic State. Historically the Fascist state, which was
Italy under Mussolini, bears remarkable resemblances to the country
many Republican leaders are trying to create. This Diary only covers
Thursday though Saturday due to the number of listings.
If you missed the previous versions click
here for them.
Here's the
Scoop: Ward Churchill says fascism is very much alive and in
power.
Ward Churchill was on the
Mike
Malloy Show on 2-11-05 About halfway through the show Mike asked
him what right name he would use to describe the attitude that
is prevalent in this country at this time. Mike
suggested fascism and Ward said “It's a very good word,
It's clinically accurate, not rhetorical. “Ok,
all the
component parts of fascism are very much alive and well and
unfortunately in power and ascendant at the present time.“
It's not a question of what we do to prevent it, it's
already happened. “The question is how we face it down and
defeat it, what do we do now that it's a present reality. “It's
not a danger it's a fact.” I love it when I get
confirmation.
A Fascist, A
Theocrat, and I: How
we can live in the same house, Country, and World:
I
would like to tell you all about my home life and how I came to
realize fascism was alive and well in America. When I fist started
being a lurker at Kos' wonderful creation I was attracted to some
diaries on Fascism.Nascent
Fascism: Are We in Stage One? by Lightiris,
Fascism
arrives in America: the Elephant in the Bathtub by Black
Maned Pensator, Fascism,
American Style: Anticipating the Trends by Bionic
Kitty, and Nazis
and U.S. Politics by NeoLotus
gave me a starting point that led to many days of research.
When I came
back to reading way too many diaries I started seeing trends,
so I started “This Week in Fascism.” After a roaring
start which included a top ten rating for my first edition and
excellent reviews of my second edition I became came disheartened by
a steady decrease in attention to my work while at the same time the
community as a whole was waking up to noticing signs of fascism. I am
perfectly content to allow that trend to continue.
When
I started looking for fascists I found one, where I can't say that I
least expected, across the dinner table. While not actually surprised
by this, it
was disheartening. My father has said such statements as “I
don't care if they work for $4.00 an hour as long as they contribute
to society,” and “If they call up 65 year olds I
would grab a gun to fight those damned liberals.” These are
just two of the more blatant statements he has made.
A few days ago he asked me to present his “plan for Social
Security reform.” The major points he thought we should
compromise on were; raising the cap to $100k or $110k, as if he
thinks that would put a dent in fixing the “problem”. He
suggested slowly raising the private account contributions starting
at 2% then increasing to 2.5% and finally 3% in consecutive years,
nice compromise to allow a phase-in. Workers
under the age of 40 could totally opt out of Soc. Sec. for five, ten,
or fifteen years and then jump back in if their investments weren't
working out. If at 40 someone decided to stay out of Soc. Sec.
they were on their own. He asked me to present this to you all for
comments. And another thing he almost never turns the television of
Faux news except for ballgames, golf, and for some unknown reason
sci-fi movies and UFO documentaries.
Now
let's get to the theocrat. My mother is a textbook study case of the
American Evangelical. She goes to Church whenever the doors are open.
While she used to have her own key,
she actually boycotted the last preacher who took her key away for
praying at the Church immediately after 9-11. She believes Bush is
God's hand on Earth and anyone who is against him is ungodly,
including me. She
and my father both listen to whatever right wing talking head is on
the radio whenever they are in the car. My mother actually puts Rush
on in her sitting room most afternoons. My mother is also full blown
racist; she did compromise on American Indians when I gave her four
grandchildren who were Choctaw.
So
how can we live under the same roof without blowing the top off of it
you may ask? We hardly communicate is how. My mother cooks, cleans,
goes to
Church and pretty much stays in her own little world. My father stays
in front of his television with Faux news confirming everything he
believes, and I stay here with my friends and look for good material
for “This Week in Fascism.” There is no way any of us can
possibly persuade the other that their ideologies are in error since
we each continuously seek reinforcement of our ideals; mother at
Church, father on Faux, and me at Kos's place.
Can
there be any good conclusions? Yes, I think there can be.
First we
must give up on the unconvertible and find ways to let them, or
should I say us, stay in their (our) delusions by seeking peace with
them. That actually could work in foreign policy also. We need to
seek out those that can be persuaded and work on them. My sister and
brother-in-law are evangelicals in Indiana, they shocked me when they
admitted last summer that they were “anybody but Bush”
voters. They are family-oriented
new home owners; they are low income and got a lot of help in getting
their home. I believe that is our target. We have more then
enough “family values” on our agenda, also our domestic
security credentials are solid, plus we have proven that Democratic
leadership has continuously been better for the economy. There you
have it. I have identified the ammunition and the target.
I just hope Howard Dean can do an effective job in
leading the battles to come so we can defeat “conservative
fascism.”
Delaware
Dem hit it big with the highly recommended Conservative:
American Fascism Has Arrived UPDATED with proof. Let's
all give Teacher Ken some mojo for actually bringing this story up
last Sunday. I must have missed where the “update” was
placed, but
the story
that Scott McConnell actually wrote a compelling article
for The American Conservative was big news and music to my ears.
I will begin to focus just as much on “bottom up” growth
as well as “top down.”
1.
Powerful and continuing expression of nationalism.
Liminal
gave us a disturbing Pictorial
Account of Military Recruitment at Kentucky Church. The Men's
Night Out at a Large Kentucky Church became on big “praise the
Troop/Country rally. This was originally posted by a young
conservative at fark.com but that link is no longer valid. Liminal
had the forsight to reprodive the entire post at his
blog. I disagree with the assertion that this is a Church and
State separation issue since a church has every right to do this. But
this is a sign of growing nationalism. I personally believe that a
Church is the wrong place to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
since everyone should, at least in that setting, understand they have
a greater allegance. If my Church did this I would remove my
membership the very next day. But in all honesty my Church has no
buildings and its membership roll in not kept on Earth.
Get
me out of Dixie let us know that This
is what democracy looks like....down south that is. Prior to
President Bush's “Town Hall” meeting in Raleigh N.C.
there was a group of protestors across the street from the
“invitation only” group in line for the event, with what
looks like massive police presence in between. When a black leader of
the protestors started to speak using a bullhorn the protestors
started singing “Dixie.” That was just so wrong on so
many levels. Ok maybe just the one blatant level.
Jerome
a Paris has analyzed our foreign policy and determined that Iraq
is NOT about OIL but about TOLERATING NO DISSENT. After looking
at the countries that the U.S. considers anti American compared to
democracies his conclusion is that the bad countries are first and
foremost guilty of failure to toe the line to the U.S. Of course
Inverted has
found a different take on this where the Moscow
Times has concluded that Bush
Gets His Oil & Sistani Gets His God or at least the
money.
2.
Disdain for the importance of human rights.
Dem
Burns informed us the Pentagon
Finally Admits Guantanamo Abuses. Of course they did. Just ask
the freepers, this was just playful interrogations. The freepers are
trying to get tickets as we speak. Now let me get serious. To a
Muslim this stuff is equivalent to forcing a Christian so jam a cross
up his ass or making them sit on the Bible right after an enema.
Actually those gross examples to not compare to the Psychological
Religious shame these tactics can produce. To the Muslims these
tactics were emotional torture of the worst kind in an attempt to
separate them from their God, period.
Armando
wants us to know that Bob
Herbert is a Good Man. Maher Amar, the Canadian citizen rendered
to Jordon, finally got some American Press via Bob
Herbert's Torture
American Style Op/Ed in the New York Times. Of course the winger
reaction ran the gamut from “who cares” to “glad to
see it.”
Plutonium
Page fund out that Bush's
words are to be used in C.I.A. interrogator's defense. David A.
Passaro, a contract interrogator for the Central Intelligence Agency,
charged with beating an Afghan prisoner who died the next day, is
basing his defense in part on statements by President Bush and
other officials that called for tough action to prevent terrorist
attacks and protect American lives. In a court decision unsealed this
week Mr. Passaro may cite top officials' written legal justifications
for harsh interrogation techniques and a Congressional resolution
passed after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and the Pentagon
calling on the president "to use all necessary and appropriate
force" to thwart further terrorism. If these legal
justifications were “internal arguments” within the
administration how could Passaro know about them. I'm glad this
defense if being allowed because it actually makes the Government
culpable in the treatment of those tortured. I just hope the jury
holds him personally accountable.
Sydluna
found a Bushism that the rest of us missed from January unless Bush
deliberately misquoted the Declaration of Independence. In a
statement proclaiming National Sanctity of Human Life Day and
Religious Freedom Day, Bush noted, in a statement, that "The
Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all Americans
are endowed by the Creator with the inalienable rights to life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness." I would give him an F in
history for forgetting that the Declaration states all men
are created equal, and endowed by their creator with certain
inalienable rights...
3.
Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.
J.
Bou found indications which suggest that the Washington
Times is a racist rag. The Southern
Poverty Law Center has pointed out that the Managing Editor of
the Washington Times' wife, Marian Kester Coombs, believes America
has become a "den of iniquity" thanks to "its efforts
to accommodate minorities." She has wrote many racist articles
for both the Wash. Times and other publications including The
Occidental Quarterly, which ran her glowing review of a book on
"racially conscious" whites by Robert S. Griffin, a member
of the neo-Nazi National Alliance. But that's just the tip of the
iceberg. The Wash. Times, acording to the article, has also included
racist advertisements and other racist writers. This may not seem so
bad unless you know the W. Times was former President Reagan's
“favorite paper” and George H. W. Bush once said that it
"in my view brings sanity to Washington, D.C." That is the
scary part.
Jolly
Buddah discovered that Gov.
Ahnold calls Dems Source of Evil. The California Governor, during
a speech at a convention of the California Republican Party said "Now
we are going to the source [the Democratic controlled legislature] —
right there where all the evil is — and we're going to fix this
problem once and for all." The fix he plans is a special
election to throw the Democrats out of the Legislature. This “final
solution” is to get rid of the Democrats, from the House at
least.
4.
The supremacy of the military/avid militarism.
One
of the most wrote about stories of the last few days, behind that
little Guckert affair, was Eason Jordan's decision to leave CNN after
being vilified by the Right for stating that the military was
actually targeting journalists in Iraq. My research on this story has
led me to the conclusion that during the initial phase of the Iraq
war, when we were targeting the communications infrastructure, our
military did not distinguish between military command and control and
journalistic
communications. It was likely the military considered all high
strength broadcasts as potential military communications sources and
therefore targets during the bombing campaign which led to the
destruction of the radio, television, and satellite broadcasts
outlets which in some cases caused the deaths of foreign journalists.
If journalists were broadcasting in the war zone they could have been
targeted just as easily as actual military communications. So
therefore we were targeting journalists while arguable we were not
specifically targeting Journalists.
5.
Rampant Sexism.
6.
A complaisant mass media.
Steph
Dray informed us how much CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer
Spins O'Malley Story for the GOP. Instead of focusing the story
on the Governor's aide,
who was implicated in spreading the unfounded rumors about the
Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley on freerepublic.com, Blitzer repeated
the unsupported allegations that were used to smear Mayor O'Malley.
Get that,
you Gannon investigators; no matter what the story is, the sex is
what gets reported.
Heterodoxy
didn't surprise many people when she informed us that Fox
News Takes Lying to Its Zenith. I'll use her words. “Harrigan
lies about democracy, lies about Chavez popular support, lies about
the U.S.-sponsored coup, lies about the Venezuelan military, lies
about terrorism and lies about oil.” I defer to the expertise
of others, rarely.
Alan
S brought to light a Bombshell
the US Media Won't Touch. I have seen the story that the
Pakistani Government actually paid warlords over half a million
dollars in order for the warlords to pay al-Queda but Alan's framing
the lack of media coverage makes this worthy of This Week in
Fascism.
Dump
Terry McAuliffe opened a can of worms that I believe we need to
look through when he asked Who's
Paying Conservative Op-Ed Writers? With the success we had in the
Guckert
investigation maybe someone should start a project looking into where
conservative Op/Ed authors are getting their money from. We can
easily find where the pundits are listed with “associations”
which receive right-wing
funding. We can also track where they have been speaking by digging
into press releases, invitations, and announcements. Let's get an
organization and assign researchers to every pundit for not only
their private funds but also their corporate and private funds. If we
can publicize a few of them we can pressure the rest to openly reveal
who's
buttering their bread.
7.
Obsession with national security.
Brainwrap
has found a Disturbing
Orwellian RFID story out of California. Another school
is setting up Radio Frequency Identification Devices. They are
actually implementing this program in the elementary school
in my Deep East Texas County. The entire system includes cameras and
RFIDs to monitor various areas of the school. This is the type of
thing that is the precursor to the full blown “Big Brother”
government. Teach the children that this is normal and hide Orwell's
book and they will accept this as normal.
Catjo
appeared to be first with the news of a N.Y.
Defense Lawyer Convicted of Aiding Terrorism. Lynne Stewart, 65,
was convicted in New York Federal Court of aiding terrorists. I
personally did not follow the case as closely as I would have liked
to but it appears to me that she was convicted to make other Lawyers
know that they cannot actually defend anyone accused of
terrorism.
Wilfred
had the most discussion of the House Bill 418 when he informed us
that This
Bill Just Passed the House: Call Your Senator! This is the Bill
which will give the Homeland Security Director the unquestionable
ability to suspend any laws to construct border security. This law is
designed to allow the HSD to circumvent environmental laws that are
preventing the completion of a border fence in California, but
instead of
targeting the specific problem, the Congress is giving the HSD
totalitarian power whenever he sees fit. If this law succeeds in its
objective, what
is to stop the Congress from expanding these powers into
“investigative situations” or into “threat
elimination.?”
This is the beginning of totalitarianism. There were many other
diaries on this subject:
Jerome
a Paris noticed, from across the pond, that it's Worse
than ID Card - ID Tags. The new national I D card legislation has
a provision that can be used to require RFID devises as part of the
new Identification Cards. At least they won't to ask us for our
papers. They can just sit by a screen and our papers can be read
without our even knowing it. Now how hard is it to steal a wallet? I
just hope they don't figure that out because I don't want to think
about how they would cure that problem.
8.
Religion and ruling elite are tied together.
J.
Rosenau let us know that the Kansas Attorney General is Violating
the law to promote creationism. Phil Kline, the Kansas AG, met
Tuesday with the six conservative members of the State Board of
Education in two groups of three to inform them that he would back
their use of “Evolution is Just a Theory” stickers for
science textbooks:
Kansas
Open Meeting Act Sec. III.B.4. Serial
communications between a majority of a quorum of a public body, the
purpose of which is to discuss a common topic of business or affairs
of that body by the members, constitutes a meeting. Such
communications may occur through calling trees, e-mail or an agent of
the body.
Now we know “what's the matter
with Kansas;"
their AG doesn't care about obeying his own laws.
Coloradem
wants to know if Colorado
is Next on the "No Gay Marriage" Bandwagon? It looks
like that with Democrats in control of the both houses of the
Colorado Legislature for the first time in 44 years that Dobson's
Focus on the Family has set it's sights on gathering enough signatures to earn a ballot spot instead of lobbying legislators to refer it to the ballot. We've
got our work cut out for us to not only hold on to these legislatures but
to reduce the damage uncontrolled conservatism is doing to this
country.
9.
Power of corporations protected.
David
W in SF brought forth Cheney,
Enron, and complicity in fraud. There are actually tapes that
show Enron executives conspired with at least one power plant to
reduce supply during peak demand in a concerted effort to raise
prices. The bigger concern was that the author of the
San Francisco Chronicle piece had a copy of a memo passed from
Enron's Kenneth Lay
to Vice President Cheney three months later. The contents of this
memo became Administration talking points and energy policy.
D.
Cookie informed us of how Bush
Environmental Values Demoralize Biologists. This is based on a
survey which appeared in the Denver
Post which included the fact that more than half [of the
scientists] said they knew of cases where Bush administration
officials granted business requests to reverse scientifically based
decisions. That's just a teaser for you all. Go see the rest.
Lapin added Federal
Scientists Forced to Alter Findings to the discussion which
received much more attention and discussion.
Pam
in Durham thinks we are going Back
to the days of the exploding Ford Pinto. She explains why we need
to allow Class Action Suits and allowing juries to set punitive
damages. Corporations will have less incentive to make safety an
important consideration when the cost of putting out an unsafe
product is reduced. The item that caught my eye was where President
Bush said "The class-action bill is a strong step forward in our
efforts to reform the litigation system and keep America the best
place in the world to do business." I believe this is the wedge
we need. Democrats want to make this the best place in the world for
people, while Republicans want to make this the best place for
business.
Looking
forward to the future found a great example of Orwellian
doublespeak with this Republican
attempt to create more jobs. The Bill enacted last year with the
title of “American Jobs Creation Act of 2004” is
actually just a plan to change the Tax Code to benefit corporations.
Do you think it would have passed if it was titled “another
corporate tax break?”
10.
Power of labor suppressed or eliminated.
JRE
let us know about Another
anti-worker appointment. President Bush has nominated
Ronald Meisburg, who as a recess appointment has served as a reliable
anti-union vote on the National Labor Relations Board. Is anyone
surprised?
11.
Disdain for the arts and Intellectuals.
Meander
gave us a look at Politics
>> science in Bush administration. I will give you a
glimpse from the lead in. The Union
of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and Public
Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) issued separate
press releases on a study that shows how the Bush administration is
attacking science for political gains. I hope that's enough to wet
your appetite for more.
12.
Obsession with crime and punishment.
13.
Rampant cronyism and corruption.
Shirah
let us know that Federal
Employee Gag Rules Lead to Waste and Abuse. Let's all give up a
big “duh.” Any long time member of the reality based
community already knows this, but let's give Shirah some mojo for
reminding us of this and for bringing this up since there are many
newer members who may not have been aware of this.
Texas
Nate let us know that the Texas
Leg. is Trying to Kill DeLay Investigation. The Texas Legislator
is attempting to take over the DeLay investigation by giving the
Ethics Commission sway over district attorneys in election law cases.
The Ethics Commission is among the weakest arms of state government.
In nearly 14 years, the commission, which has civil but not criminal
authority in election law complaints, has never, that's never,
subpoenaed a witness or documents to investigate a complaint."
That's how we do things in Texas. I want out! Bonddad
added some quotes that deserve attention on how the Texas
Bill Would Stop Delay Prosecution.
14.
Fraudulent elections.
Class
Warfare.
Dem
From CT brought us the fact that Bush's
Budget Cuts Target Children's Health. By checking the numbers for
the cuts in social programs it is apparent that the White House is
taking away funding disproportionately from the weakest among us. Get
this out to those “security moms.” Bush promised to
protect their children from terrorists, but who's left to protect
their children from Conservatives?
Toktora
analyzed the programs that are either getting the ax or the saw and
believes the consevative agenda is to make Our
Children Brainwashed and Ignorant. This produced an excellent
discussion of the programs that the most recent Budget is eliminating
or cutting. You need to go join in and see what the actual
conservative plan entails.
Just
Plain Propaganda.
Marie
finally put up a diary about Pentagon
TV - GOP Insourcing. I don't think there is any need for
expanding on this. How could anyone doubt that this is anything but
pure propaganda? I'm just glad someone finally presented this in a
diary.
There
is hope! Here are some articles on a way to fight back.
This
section is devoted to those who have done something and are sharing
their stories, those who have suggestions for ways to be active, and
those who cry out for immediate action. I do what little I can. I am
becoming active in my local blue county in the biggest red state. I
plan to do as much as I can when called upon. I'm sure I missed many
of these Diaries this week so my apologies to all.
Richard
Cranium has issued a Progressive
Call to Action: Boycott NPR Pledge Drives. Actually that's a very
good idea. There are no major media outlets more tied to money from
progressives then NPR and PBS. Call, send an E-mail or write and tell
them that you will hold your usual pledges for three months until you
see a sign that they are presenting more accurate news and
commentary. Tell them that in three months you will send the money to
alternative news sources if they do not improve.
Astronaut
a Gogo wants us to rise in Dean's
Defense! Now that Howard Dean has been elected to the
chairmanship of the DNC it is time to motivate others through writing
letters, sending e-mails, making donations and anything else we can
think of to show support for the newly revamped party.
Chinko
Pelinke brought us an item from Democrats.com
- Petition to demand a special prosecutor for Jeff Gannon. This
petition needs to be signed. Here
is the link. I just hope Susan G., NY Bri, and the other Kossacks
get to testify in a televised hearing.
Demand
Caring gave us an excellent How
to be effective about contacting your senator: What Really Happens
When You Call? That prompted DC
Mike to place his diary on Effectively
Talking to the Hill 102 earlier then he had intended. The bottom
line advice is to phone your Representative often. Get to know
who works on what in the office. Get a personal rapport with an aide
during recess. Jonathan
added How
to contact the government: another perspective which concentrates
on contacting government agencies.
Anti-Rove
brought us the entire text plus arguments in an effort to get us to
Support
the Feingold Amendments to the Patriot Act. I'm hope everyone
here is willing to go support this legislation, but are you willing
to call your Senators and Representatives, especially if they are on
their respective Judiciary Committees.
Kossacks
in Action: Running for Office or Working for Candidates. ALL NEW INFO
ADDED WEEKLY!
Matt Hupp
(doctormatt06),
who is not a doctor, but plays one on the internet invited us to Help
him write his speech. This was his address to the local Henrico
County Democratic Committee in order to get their nod to be their
candidate in the 72nd VA House District. Kossack speech writers and
editors came to his aid and one even went as far as rewriting the
whole thing. After the speech he added further Developments
on his run for the State House. It seems that the local chair was
not aware of his intention to run so he brought in another candidate.
Follow this and help Matt with the decision he has to make. To run or
not to run, that is the question.
Susie
Turnbull who is running for DNC Vice Chair asked Lavoisier
1794 to post A
Personal Message from DNC Vice Chair Candidate Susie Turnbull.
Susie spent two hours Tuesday evening answering our questions. She
also continued answering our questions on Wednesday.
Kt.
in TX let us know that His
Father Filed for Office Today in Texas. On Monday Tom
Musselman officially filed to run for the City Council of
Fredericksburg, Texas. K.T. is encouraging everyone to publicize his
father's web site; Tom
Musselman for Fredericksburg City Council
Simon
Rosenberg, who has had a DailyKos account since Dec. 23, 2004,
produced a diary to tell us, Fellow
Kossaks, that he was dropping out of the DNC race and endorsing
Howard Dean. Let him know you still support him and thank him for the
gesture. Also thank him for being willing to be called a Fellow
Kossack.
R.C.
Vanoz also announced that She's
running for Congress! This came soon after Dr. Matt's
announcement (only one diary separated the two). She followed up with
Shout
out to Colorado Dems! (w/ poll) where she wants to know who is in
Colorado and where they are to see if she can find local support from
fellow Kossacks. It seems on four people were in Colorado. If your
there let her know.
Byron
Miller is posting as Byron
M. This week Byron offered Free
Web Hosting & Blogs for the Kos' Community. Even though I
prefer to keep my diaries here specifically because I list only other
Kossack diaries and prefer the exposure I receive here, does anyone
think I should take him upon his offer?
