There still is one way McCain can win: scare the hell out of Americans and use Barack Obama's desire to run a decent, campaign (with no fear-mongering) against him.
John McCain isn't going to win the presidency on the economy or Iraq or his vast political experience. He has one road to take that might lead to victory: fear.
If there's one thing that Americans actually look forward to, it's being scared. We never admit it, but we pull fear around us like a familiar blanket and then we look for big daddy types to help us get over our fears. Even when it's big daddy who instilled fear in us in the first place.
As Americans, we are much, much less afraid of "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran" than we are of being bombed by Iran.
McCain knows Obama will do almost anything not to sink so low as to willingly scare Americans just to get their votes. McCain knows Hillary nearly won the nomination by being unafraid to scare the hell out of Americans with her infamous "It's 3 AM - let's obliterate Iran" rhetoric.
John McCain will have a free ride for a while, scaring the heck out of Americans, while Barack Obama tries his best to run a decent campaign.
What can Barack Obama do? Surely, and soundly, and in an out-front, non-scary way, promise to do what he's always promised: focus on real terrorists in Pakistan, and continue to suggest using targeted missile strikes against them. Perhaps implore President Bush to not wait any longer - to capture and kill Bin Laden now!
In other words, let the air out of tires of McCain's Fear Express - before it can pick up any momentum.
