Here are some breaking news---the President will be visiting the Gulf Coast region where the oil spill occurred on Sunday:
President Obama will head to the Gulf Coast Sunday morning for a trip an administration official describes as having "a very small footprint."
The trip, announced Saturday morning, comes after Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday "[c]ertainly not this weekend," when asked if the president would visit the area in the wake of the oil spill there. (10:01 a.m.)
This is good news to hear. There were concerns that not having gone to the region this weekend would have invited criticism of the administration for looking disconnected from the environmental disaster.
Also, there was a cabinet-level meeting held about the oil spill by Homeland Security advisor John Brennan:
Attending the meeting -- which White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said was "to discuss the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and ensure that the resources of the federal government are fully integrated in the response to the incident details" -- were Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Admiral Mike Mullen, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Rear Admiral Mary Landry, Deputy Secretary of Interior David Hayes, NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco and Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Carol Browner.
Also Friday, the Pentagon mobilized the Louisiana National Guard Friday to assist in the response to the oil spill. In a statement stressing BP’s culpability for the spill and that the company would payu fort the Guard response, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said: "In response to the BP oil spill, the Secretary of Defense is authorizing under title 32 the mobilization of the Louisiana National Guard to help in the ongoing efforts to assist local communities in the cleanup and removal of oil and to protect critical habitats from contamination. As the responsible party in this incident, the government will hold BP accountable for the costs of the deployment."
