This is another in a series of diaries offered as a distraction from the struggle of the day, a brief respite from meta wars, and a reminder that the world is full of amazing critters. Of course with the ongoing disaster in the Gulf any photos of marine life may take on a little greater significance. I hope you enjoy your visit here.

Humuhumu-nukunuku-apua'a
Famed in song and story, the Wedge-Tailed Triggerfish
Weke (prounounce the w as a v)
Yellowfin Goatfish.
Honu
Green Sea Turtle
Alo'ilo'i
Hawaiian Dascyllus
Trembling Nudibranch
Here you can see the detail on its rhynophores or sensory organs.
Puhi paka
Yellowmargin Moray
This is the big eel of the title. It is probably the biggest yellowmargin moray I have ever seen at nearly four feet long and beefy.
A closer look
Another Yellowmargin.
Puhi kauila
Viper Moray
This is my first shot of this nasty looking species of eel. It is not great as it was deep in a hole and I got a lot of backscatter because I had to put the flash right next to the lens to light it up. This shot is looking straight into its maw.
Redstripe Pipefish
This is a relative of the sea horse and as this specimen is carrying eggs along its underside, it is a male. The female deposits the fertilzed eggs there for it to carry until they hatch.
Malolo
Flying Fish
These fantastic creatures have evolved a great defense from the game fish that find them so tasty: they take to the air.
Another flying fish.
