Greetings, Cranky Users! This week there have been several interesting diaries about DK4 updates and revisions. That includes some changes to matters related to ratings, troll and otherwise.
The diaries we're discussing here are:
elfling's 4/27 diary
ct's 4/28 diary
aoeu's 4/28 diary
Plus, special bonus!
an old (2006) but exceptionally clear description by Hunter of how rating is meant to work, provided here as reference.
Daily Kos most certainly remains a work in progress, and yet, there is progress and perhaps some of it will make your use of the site a little easier or better. Let's slide below the squiggle and see what we've got.
Before we talk about mojo-related stuff, there are some other changes worth knowing about, to wit:
- twitpic and picasa are now approved image hosts. In this comment in her diary, elfling explains why it's not possible to just allow any old site to be a DK image host at will.
- The groups to which a diary has been republished are now listed at the bottom of the diary. Coming soon: the editor's republish notes that were published to each group.
- Recent Replies is now a direct link in your Welcome Back box. This change isn't from this week, but there continue to be so many questions, it obviously wasn't made clear. aoeu kindly provides this picture in elfling's diary. The all-caps word COMMENTS is still a link that goes to the list of all your comments. The word Replies to the right of it is a new link that goes to the list of your comments that have been replied to in the most recent rolling 48 hours.
Let's break out of the bullet points for this one. If you run a group, and you go into a diary already published by your group, you'll see a new option, Move to Top, just above the comments where you see the Republish-Edit-Update-Delete options. It allows you to bump an older diary back up to the top of your group's list of diaries. elfling tells us it gives the diary-in-the-group a new timestamp, which would imply that it does not change the timestamp of the diary itself, meaning that it does not re-open diary recs or comments. I decided to test this by moving a diary up in Cranky Users. I picked an elfling diary, and then I picked a diary of my own. What I got in each case was this:
So, once I get done with this diary, I will be filing a form of some kind, because a) I am a group admin in Cranky Users, and b) I wrote the second diary, so if I am not authorized to do this, who exactly would be? (Move my fucking diary to the top, kos!) I'll keep you all apprised of anything I find out.
Now, the mojo matters!
- Hide-rates can no longer be recycled. You may take them back if your view of the situation changes, but you may not then re-use them. Click Hide 5 times and you're done for the day.
- All mojo was recalculated over last weekend, and then a second fix was applied by ct because TU had become too hard to get. All this will have resulted in a shift in number of bars for many people. Further, another fix corrected a situation where "bony mojo" was not assigned to users who were autobanned.
- The period for recommending comments has been adjusted again, as explicated here by aoeu (emphasis mine):
...comments more than twenty four hours old cannot be rated anymore unless they are Tip Jars. The theory was that by allowing comments to be rated longer that useful discussions would be extended. It turns out that it also allows several days worth of HRs to be thrown in the same diary.
Diaries live for ten days. It hasn't always been that way but it is now and has been for several years. What that means is that comments may be made and responded to for ten days from publication of the diary. Comments may also be rated during that time unless they are more than twenty four hours old. When the diary closes, that's it, no more rating or responding even to comments only minutes old.
By way of explanation, here are a couple of comments from kos on the subject of these mojo changes. Again, emphasis in the second quote is mine.
We audited the use of recycled donuts
and it turns out the VAST majority were used for nefarious purposes. And since we're in the midst of a crackdown on stupid flamewars, taking ammo off the table was an obvious solution to a very real problem.

Because
HRs are almost never received by people who are playing nice. You want to go into a flamewar and engage, you pay a price. If you want to be a dick, you pay a price.
A stray HR for one bad comment won't ding you. If you receive several, then the system suspects there's something else at play, and you will get hit.
I'm keeping an eye on things. If there's collateral damage, we'll tinker some more.

So that would seem to be the response to everyone whose concern about new ratings procedures is that they will be unfairly hide-rated and lose mojo. We're to take it that live people are indeed watching what happens. That would be good! That's just what I'd like to think! So I will be very interested and curious to see how this goes.
How about you, my Cranky friends? What's still undone that's bothering you? What tips have you got to share with others today? Please use the comment thread to say what's on your mind. And here's the Big Box o' Links™ to help you report your problems.
WHERE TO TURN: LINKS
☀ For more stuff sort of like this, the Cranky Users group.
☀ For lots of official detail about the site and its workings, the DK4 FAQ (frequently-asked questions). The main Daily Kos FAQ is still here.
☀ To report something not working to the dev team, the bug report form. A bug report will not be directly responded to, but will be kept on file by the development team until the issue is resolved or otherwise closed.
☀ To get immediate response for technical help or urgent site problems, the contact form (be sure to select the tech support radio button). A tech support request will get prompt response, but does not get added to the bug report database. If you use it to report a known bug, you'll be told it's a known bug, and that's it.
☀ For immediate catharsis, complain in a Cranky Users thread. These threads are regularly scanned by kos and developers, but it's not a guaranteed way to bring an issue to the attention of these folks. But sometimes you just need some sympathy from other cranky people! (And sometimes, other cranky people have advice that can help you.)
Our thanks to kos, the development team, and the Dkosopedia contributors for their vigorous efforts to deliver a site that works well and to help us know how to work it!
