In response to the
new Daily Kos/SEIU poll showing Democrat Kathy Hochul with a narrow lead in the three-way special election for western New York's 26th congressional district, the campaign of Republican Jane Corwin snorted out
this response:
“I think they have a pretty long record of being inaccurate with their polls,” Corwin spokesman Matthew Harakal said of PPP.
When asked, Harakal declined to release internal polling from the Corwin campaign to counter the PPP survey.
“We’re very comfortable with where we are,” he said. “The fact is that Kathy Hochul and Jack are on the wrong side of the issues. The only poll that matters is on Election Day.”
I love every paragraph of this response. Nate Silver's already handled issue #1 for us:
As for #2, if you attack someone else's poll but refuse to release your own numbers showing a different picture, I think the political dictionary defines that as "admitting the other guy is right."
And #3, well, that's just a classic. Whenever someone says that "the only poll that matters is on Election Day," it's almost always accompanied by the desperate stench of flop-sweat. If Corwin had a better story to tell, she'd be telling it. But right now, she's in a cold panic, praying for the NRCC and Karl Rove's American Crossroads to save her. This is a great opportunity for Democrats to humiliate the GOP—and what's more, the Republicans agree.
