After the elections last November, I was all for running President Obama out of town on a rail. Oh, me of little faith!
In fairness, it was a pretty dark moment. But I definitely overreacted. Or lost sight of the big picture. Or both. Yeah, probably both.
So that's my bad. I should have had a little more trust in the president's ability to keep his eye on the ball. This is why he is president and I am not. Well, okay, maybe that's not the only reason.
He prevented a second Great Depression, got the health care reform law passed, ended "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and killed Osama bin Laden. All in a little over two years. That's a pretty impressive run, and he's only halfway through his first term. If he was a white guy people would be talking "greatest president ever." Instead there's a contingent who STILL can't let go of the birth certificate "issue," and who insist with apoplectic self-righteousness that "Obama didn't kill bin Laden -- an AMERICAN SOLDIER killed bin Laden!" Give me a break. It's almost like they think leadership doesn't matter.
Oh that's right. They don't. They care about posturing and politicking and protecting the interests of Big [insert name of industry or religious group here]. But not leadership.
But whatever. If the gaggle of nitwits lining up against him are any indication, the president has nothing to worry about in 2012. The Republicans know it, too. They can smell defeat on the wind. That's why they glom onto anyone and everyone who can pronounce the words "exploratory committee" in a desperate bid to stave off the inevitable nomination of Mitt (yawn) Romney. Donald Trump? Ooh, he's famous! Oh look, Herman Cain is talking! And he's black! It's not going to work.
A few years back a prominent American politician was quoted as saying, "A leader leads." I guess he was right. I should have known better.
