ou are in the 186th Witness Revolution diary, bearing witness to pro-democracy movements in North Africa, the Middle East and beyond. We aim here to simply report, from as many reliable worldwide resources as possible, on the successes, challenges or failures as brave people strive against oppression for representative democracy with civil and human rights. One small bit of assurance that they do not strive in obscurity.
TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS
Tthere is a campaign to have a case against the Bahraini government for crimes against humanity taken up by the ICC. Meanwhile, a chilling announcement at the Oslo Freedom Forum and a reminder of what happens to so many who are detained in Bahrain. In Yemen, Taiz protesters have been rocked by explosions and water cannons for three days. We see a VERY GRAPHIC recording of the resulting injuries. And in Syria, continued documentation of abuses there.

GENERAL ANALYSIS
(h/t Dibsa 5/10)Governments still cracking down hard on media covering pro-democracy demonstrations
The crackdown by the Syrian authorities on media trying to cover the anti-government protests continues to escalate. Arrests, threats and acts of intimidation are all still taking place. The Internet is also being censored.
(h/t Dibsa 5/9)U.S. Products Help Block Mideast Web
As Middle East regimes try to stifle dissent by censoring the Internet, the U.S. faces an uncomfortable reality: American companies provide much of the technology used to block websites.

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria announced a sharp increase in budget spending and waived duties on staple foods on Monday in a move designed to stop public discontent spilling over into the kind of revolts rocking other Arab states
BAHRAIN
(h/t Dibsa 5/10) - Applying pressure on Bahrain
GIVEN THE CIVIL WAR in Libya and serial massacres of opposition demonstrators in Syria , it’s not surprising that another ugly campaign of repression, in the Persian Gulf emirate of Bahrain, hasn’t gotten much attention. In its own way, however, Bahrain could prove crucial to the outcome of this year’s Arab uprisings — and to whether it advances or damages the strategic interests of the United States.
(h/t dibsa 5/10) - Analysis: West turns blind eye to Bahrain crackdown
(Reuters) - The fate of Bahrain's protest movement is a stark reminder of how Western and regional power politics can trump reformist yearnings, even in an Arab world convulsed by popular uprisings against entrenched autocrats.
(h/t Dibsa 5/10) - As Bahrain’s Abuses Grow, U.S. Stays on Sidelines
At least 30 people have died in Bahrain, protesters and medical workers are being put on trial, and prominent opposition politicians are being arrested—but the United States has yet to toughen its talk or impose sanctions on its Gulf ally.
(h/t Dibsa 5/10) - Bahrain, a kingdom of ominous silence
An eerie silence and a paralyzing sense of fear currently grip Bahrain. Since mid-March, when tens of thousands of protesters last took to the streets demanding political reform, Bahraini security and military forces have engaged in an ongoing, systematic and brutal campaign to crush the country’s pro-democracy forces. The crackdown has been sweeping and shocking. Dozens of activists have been killed. Hundreds have been imprisoned and tortured. Bahrain’s leading independent newspaper, Al-Wasat, is expected to close down on May 10.
(h/t Dibsa 5/10) - Blindfolded, beaten and tortured: grim new testimony reveals fate of Bahrain's persecuted doctors
Harrowing testimony of torture, intimidation and humiliation from a doctor arrested in the crackdown on medical staff in Bahrain has revealed the lengths to which the regime's security forces are prepared to go to quash pro-democracy protests.

While the world was gripped by last weekend’s revelation that U.S. forces had secretly taken down Osama bin Laden, another covert operation was being carried out by armed security personnel — in the service of a key Middle Eastern ally of the United States.
(h/t Dibsa 5/9) - Bahrain: Serious concerns about torture and fair trial of former Front Line's Protection Coordinator Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja after initial hearing
Front Line expressed its shock and horror at the physical condition of its former Protection Coordinator Mr Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja when he was presented for trial in Manama on Sunday 8 May 2011. Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja had visibly been brutally beaten and had reportedly been taken to the military hospital to undergo a 4-hour operation during his period in incommunicado detention. Witnesses to the opening of the trial process reported he bore the evidence of having endured severe torture. He was reportedly the victim of 4 fractures to the side of his face and continues to have problems eating.

Bahrain:End the state of emergency. Violations must be investigated
Bahrain’s King Hamad called Sunday for emergency law in Bahrain to be lifted on June 1, 2011.

DUBAI (AFP) – Bahraini opposition leaders appeared Sunday in a military court charged as part of a group of 21 with forming a terrorist organisation and attempting to overthrow the monarchy, a rights activist said, citing lawyers
(h/t Dibsa 5/9) - Bahrain activists to go on trial
Bahrain's military prosecutor has accused 21 pro-democracy activists of seeking to overthrow the Sunni Muslim monarchy with the help of a foreign "terrorist group".
(h/t Dibsa 5/9) - While Bahrain demolishes mosques, U.S. stays silent
MANAMA, Bahrain — In the ancient Bahraini village of Aali, where some graves date to 2000 B.C., the Amir Mohammed Braighi mosque had stood for more than 400 years — one of the handsomest Shiite Muslim mosques in this small island nation in the Persian Gulf.
(h/t Dibsa 5/9) - Journalists, too, are victims of Bahrain's crackdown
MANAMA, Bahrain — Haider Mohamed al Noaimi was barefoot and in his pajamas when a posse of about 30 masked security personnel came for him in the middle of the night, and that's how he went to prison.
In Bahrain's government-declared state of emergency, his story says much about human rights here.
(h/t Dibsa 5/9) - Emergency Briefing on the Human Rights Situation in Bahrain
The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is deeply distressed about the ongoing crisis in Bahrain, and concerned that coverage of the situation by the mainstream media is insufficient. Since 14th February 2011, Bahrain has seen a political movement renew its demands for freedom, democracy, and the revival of communal partnership in the framework of the civil movements seeking justice that are currently sweeping Arab countries. This was followed by brutal suppression by the Bahraini regime and its security apparatus, as well as the invasion by Saudi-led military forces

section of article which covers pro-democracy movements throughout Africa
Whilst the world was watching Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt and Libya, Djibouti had an election on 8 April. With no opposition, a state-controlled media and no civil society movement, it was easy enough for President Omar Guelleh to change the constitution allowing him to run for a third term - thereby continuing 35 year rule by the same family. But this little dictatorship is strategically central to the US Africa Command (2,000 US troops are based here) and the NATO countries. Unlike in Libya, Djibouti's 1 million population can expect no support from the West in their small attempts to have a voice.

Turkey's ambassador to Lebanon, Inan Ozyildiz, believes that despite the recent political uncertainty, all political actors in Lebanon are "engaging in dialogue," and expects democracy to take root in every country in the Arab world.
"Although every country in the region has its own characteristics and political history, the people of the Middle East have a common demand: Democracy," said Ozyildiz.
According to Ozyildiz, the Arab world's transition to democracy is late in coming. "These uprisings were kind of late, they should have started immediately after the end of the Cold War," said Ozyildiz.

CIA Part of Investigation of 'Düsseldorf Cell'
The arrest of three suspected al-Qaida members in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday followed a months-long investigation that, in addition to the German authorities, also included the participation of the CIA and Moroccan secret service. The German Federal Office of Criminal Investigation (BKA) created its own special "Comet" investigative unit to look into the case.

PALESTINE
(h/t Dibsa 4/27 ) - Palestinian officials: Unity agreement reached
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians have reached initial agreement on reuniting their rival governments in the West Bank and Gaza, officials from both sides said Wednesday, a step that would remove a main obstacle in the way of peace efforts with Israel.
Even before the agreement was to be signed, however, key questions about how to unify rival security forces remained unsolved. Israel immediately rejected the prospect of a Palestinian government including Hamas, and the U.S. expressed similar concerns
(h/t UnaSpenser ) -
Hamas-Fatah reconciliation a Palestinian form of Arab spring
Reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas is a historic achievement for the Palestinians, whose rivalries and divisions have weakened them and been exploited by their enemies.
Agreement to form an interim government and fix a date for elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip next year is also a real triumph for Egyptian mediation – and a surprise given the momentous changes in Cairo in the past few months.
But above all it is a challenge to Israel, the US and EU, which have all shunned Hamas as a terrorist organisation since its shock victory in Palestinian elections in 2006.
The agreement is, in its way, a version of the Arab spring shaking regimes from Libya to Syria and giving hope of change after years of impasse.

Human rights advocates decried what they called a “crackdown on civil society” in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday after authorities replaced the leadership of the country's teachers association, a well-established group that had called for democratic reforms, with government officials sympathetic to the administration.
“This attack on civil society is further proof that those in power in the UAE see anyone calling for reform as fair game,” Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director of the New York-based nonprofit organization Human Rights Watch, said in a Tuesday statement. “UAE authorities should immediately stop their hostile takeover of civil society and free the peaceful democracy activists.”
