I never thought I'd be having a Schadenfreude moment over something that wasn't happening, but I am at the moment. Unless I've missed something, this has been the reaction in the mainstream media and the wingnut tubes over Donald Trump unofficial announcement that he's running for president:
So much for all the hype. That doesn't give us a reason to let our guard down, though. Birther blather aside, Trump is, at least on paper, the kind of candidate who could be a perfect storm--conservative enough to get past the base, but moderate enough to peel off independents. I say "on paper" because his decision to skip out on Letterman raises serious questions about whether he truly is ready for prime time.
Still, given all the sound and fury that Trump's poll numbers have generated, the fact that his announcement didn't generate any waves could not be worse news for him. And that's even allowing for bin Laden's death ruling the news cycle. Trump's been in the news in one form or another for 40 years--you'd think his announcement would have at least made the A section of most papers. But so far--nothing. That, so far, is probably the best statement about his viability as a candidate--even more so with polls showing Obama destroying him in the general.
We shouldn't let our guard down about a Trump candidacy. But I'd like to think the lack of attention for his announcement is the media and wingnut tubes' way of telling him, "You're fired!"
