Enough already. Recently we witnessed the right wing pivoting in their attacks, after they shut down ACORN, onto their newest target, Planned Parenthood; we watched as the right wing executives of the Komen Foundation attempted to cut off their funding. From the attack on Sandra Fluke to the latest statement by Mitt Romney that he is going to "shut down" Planned Parenthood, to the various state laws now being passed that require women desiring abortions to go through all sorts of humiliating trials and tribulations, the right wing in this country is getting progressively less progressive (to say the least).
Now Rick Santorum has set his sights on pornography.
The former Pennsylvania senator states that, "as a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography and its profound effects on our culture."
Santorum criticized the Obama administration for turning "a blind eye ... to the scourge of pornography" and for refusing to enforce obscenity laws.
"If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so," Santorum writes. "While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration."
Jesus. That sends chills up the spine. It's not even about me, I'm past my porn prime. I think about all the young people out there (mostly but not all men) who have years and years of porn ahead of them, in an era when you can see almost anything you want, for free, in HD. Dolby Surround Sound. I too have children, Senator Santorum. And if you think that I'm going to let some Washington politician tell me that my kids (when they get a little older) will be denied the delights of porn, you're out of your mind!
The best quote is from Wonkette Rebecca Schoenkopf:
"It seems that Rick Santorum has found time in his busy schedule of condemning 'radical' women for working outside the home and using birth control, and nagging English-speaking Puerto Ricans to speak English, and now is turning his hot, penetrating gaze to manfolk-bizness," she wrote.
It's insane that with all that the American people have to deal with, that there are politicians who want to take away the one thing that is actually really great about living in these times. As hard as life is for people these days, it's never completely awful if you've got access to the internet. For many people, free porn on the internet is the only thing they've got going for them right now.
I knew that they'd eventually go after porn. But I thought that they would stay with the War on Women a little longer. I thought that they would go after women wearing pants in the workplace, and then start talking about repealing the 19th Amendment (which gave women the right to vote). I thought porn had more time. I was wrong.
In terms of how many people look at it, porn is America's most popular product. You fuck with our porn, you are fucking with the wrong people. If Rick Santorum hadn't crossed the line before, he certainly has now. We are proud Americans. We masturbate, and we vote!*
*Not at the same time, of course.
