About a week or so ago, I stumbled on this Facebook group that was created by a progressive political activist by the name of Sara Johann, where she announced that she intends to run for public office in Wisconsin in 2014, although did not specify exactly which office she intends to run for.
For those of you who don't know who Johann is, she was the organizer of a (unsuccessful) movement to convince Peter Barca, the Minority Leader of the Wisconsin State Assembly, to run against Scott Walker in the 2012 gubernatorial recall election.
There are several possibilities as to which office she may run for, and here's the three most likely ones:
Lieutenant Governor - The last two directly-elected Lieutenant Governors of Wisconsin, Democrat Barbara Lawton and Republican Rebecca Kleefisch, never held elected office prior to being elected lieutenant governor.
State Treasurer - This office has very little political power and the incumbent Republican, Kurt Schuller, won't run for another term. It's very difficult for both major parties in Wisconsin to land big-name candidates for the state treasurer's race because that office has very little power, and Democrats have a weak bench in Wisconsin, meaning that they may not be able to convince a state legislator or even a county-wide official to run.
State Assembly - Johann, if I'm not mistaken, lives in Peter Barca's assembly district, and some of Johann's recent posts to her Facebook group criticize AB110, also known as the "cheese is junk food" bill that Barca and twelve other Assembly Democrats voted for, however, Johann doesn't directly criticize Barca himself. Since Barca's assembly district is an urban Kenosha district that is heavily Democratic, the only way Barca would lose re-election would be to lose a Democratic primary.
Additionally, it's possible that Johann may run for Governor, Secretary of State, or U.S. House (against Paul Ryan), although it's highly unlikely she'd run for any of those offices for different reasons.
At this time, Johann has not set any timetable as to when she will announce which office she intends to run for in 2014.
