"Don't you think that your remarks have created doubts about the Negro's loyalty to his country?" Host Mike Douglas asked King this question on a 1967 episode of his talk show. King had recently given several high-profile speeches against the war in Vietnam. "I don't think our loyalty to the country should be measured by our ability to kill," King responded.

Russian terrorists, who recently carried out a successful bombing at a train station in the Russian town of Volgograd, killing more then 30 people, have released a new video promising to kill tourists attending the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia next month. In the video, the terrorists can be seen making bombs, one assumes for Sochi. If that weren’t disturbing enough, US Senator Angus King (I-ME), who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, went on CNN yesterday and warned American athletes and tourists against attending the Olympics in Russia because he says it’s simply not safe.

Republican strategist Mary Matalin on Sunday asserted the Russia's laws against homosexuality were irrelevant because "all of my gay friends" think Russian President Vladimir Putin is "so buff in his shirtless photos." During a panel discussion on ABC's This Week, host George Stephanopoulos said that he had recently interviewed Putin and he "absolutely believes this law is the right thing, doesn't want to change it and he even tied it, at some point, to the need to increase birth rates."

In 1927 Claude Friese-Greene shot some of the first-ever color film footage around London. He captured everyday life in the city with a technique innovated by his father, called Biocolour. [...] Urban Peek notes British Film Institute used computer enhancement to reduce the flickering effect of the original Biocolour and bring us this striking rare film which transports us back through time.

It was another notable year for all-time heat records in 2013, with six nations and three territories tying or setting records for hottest temperature on record. No nations set an all-time cold record in 2013. For comparison, five countries and two territories set all-time hottest temperature records in 2012, and the most all-time national heat records in a year was twenty nations and one territory in 2010. Since 2010, 45 nations or territories have set or tied all-time heat records, but only one nation has set an all-time cold temperature record. Since each of those years was a top-ten warmest year in Earth's history, and 2010 was the warmest year on record, this sort of disparity in national heat and cold records is to be expected. Most nations do not maintain official databases of extreme temperature records, the national temperature records I report here are in many cases not official. I use as my source for international weather records Maximiliano Herrera, one of the world's top climatologists, who maintains a comprehensive list of extreme temperature records for every nation in the world on his website.
“Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he said. “And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.” But, he said, “we should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing.”
