Good morning kogs and kossacks in Dailykosland!
Merry Monday and welcome to the working week!
Start up soundtrack
"STOP POPPING THAT GUM!" My mom would scream as if she were being tortured, "I can't STAND that gum cracking sound!"
I loved the sound of gum popping, but I learned to chew gum quietly, even though I would occasionally press the issue when when it came to bubble gum. What is the point of bubble gum unless you can blow bubbles until they pop?
For people unfamiliar with the idiom, a "pet peeve" is something that most people find mildly annoying but for some reason it affects you much more intensely: it drives you crazy, you absolutely can't stand it, it sends you "round the twist". Over the years my mom's dislike of gum cracking transferred to me, and it became one of my pet peeves, even though when I myself am chewing gum in private I enjoy the sound it makes. But when I am out in public and hear someone popping gum, I find the randomness of the sudden CLACKing sound really annoying, and then I always remember how mom used to react with visceral repulsion, as if she were hearing nails on a blackboard.
Another thing that drives me batty is pen tapping. I sit through a LOT of meetings in my line of work, and when people are sleepy or distracted in a meeting and start tapping or clicking pens without being aware of it, it really gets on my nerves. I can't make myself ignore it. Fewer people use retractable pens these days so the clicking is not as common as it once was, but the pen tapping still pops up from time to time. I have to watch myself on this one too, because sometimes I am hearing music in my head and start accompanying myself with toe taps, finger taps, or pen taps without realizing it. I always stop immediately when it is pointed out to me!
Many years ago I worked for a man who said "um" so often when he spoke that we used to amuse ourselves in long meetings by COUNTING them. At one staff meeting, sitting next to a woman who was also counting, she and I started giggling uncontrollably as he went over 500 (yes, 500. He topped 700 before the meeting was over). That used to bother me a lot more than it does now. These days I can usually manage to tune out those verbal tics: y'know, I'm like, really, whatevs, basically, and people for whom "fcuking" is their one and only intensifier adjective.
Not all of my pet peeves are auditory. My former doctor's office has parking spaces that are so narrow it is hard to get in the car if anyone is parked next to you. Even so, we were all supremely annoyed with the people who got around the problem by straddling two parking spaces, with the parking space dividing line running under the middle of the car. Once one person starts doing that then everyone is doing it, and there might as well not be any marked spaces in the lot.
Along the same lines(!), parking is at a premium in most Boston neighborhoods. At my old apartment, five cars could park in front of the building if everyone paid attention to leaving enough space for others. If one person parked in the wrong place, then five cars would not fit. Folks who lived in the building were generally considerate of each other, but occasionally someone else would park in front of the building who did not know the drill. What an annoying inconvenience to get home after a long day and see three cars parked in a space that would fit five, leaving me to circle the block endlessly. Similarly, I get out of proportion annoyed when cars or cabs or buses stop in the middle of the street to let people out when there is plenty of room to pull over and avoid blocking traffic.
There is only one thing that creeps me out as viscerally as my mom with the gum cracking. (If you are eating breakfast, this might be a good time to stop reading. You have been warned.) When someone talks, and opens his/her mouth wide, and there are thick white strands of saliva connecting the roof of the mouth to the tongue, that makes my skin crawl and almost turns my stomach. I know people can't help it and often don't even know when it's happening, but I get weirded out by it and don't even know what to say! Excuse me, could you swallow, or eat something salty, or wipe your tongue with a washcloth?
What are your pet peeves?
Do you have a polite way to ask people to stop doing it?

by peregrine kate ♥ for Motor City Kossacks
A polar vortex could not stop six Motor City Kossacks from getting together on January 4th. Kudos, all! ACA Daily Kos celebrity, Brainwrap attended and brought the group up to date on his work.
Even folks from the White House are quoting his figures now. He also observed how odd he thought it was that the mainstream media (and governmental) sources were 1) not talking to him directly, seemingly content to take his numbers as valid, and 2) not conducting similar statistical aggregations on their own. We shared his astonishment, but agreed that he is doing an important job.
Also in attendance were prolific diarist BFSkinner, user ID 162795 and has been around since long before 2008. Amber6541, famous pootie/woozle diarist with an old user ID of 157580 and sydneyluv, who beat them all with the user ID of 132330. Long timers, these three!
Discussion included Michigan's crucial statewide elections in 2014 and the need to displace Rick "the Nerd" Snyder.
As hosts for upcoming NN14, the Motor City Kossacks are ready for their first meeting with the NN14 staff this January 9th. peregrine kate expressed the need to hear from as many politically radical, grass-roots organizers in Detroit during NN14 as possible and coalesce all this collective energy. All who attend this early meeting will get to shape the agenda. Please kosmail peregrine kate to attend this important event.
Here's one photo:
