Received this e-mail today from Russ Feingold’s (D. WI) U.S. Senate campaign:
Friend --
Last week we asked you: Which part of the 5,000-plus page TPP trade agreement are you most concerned about? Well, the results are in, and I wanted to share them with you.
The winner at 47 percent was: Allows corporations to challenge U.S. laws outside of U.S. courts, and demand taxpayer money if they win.
If any piece of the TPP truly confirms that this is a deal written for the CEOs and corporations, it's that provision.
But the second place write-in also says a lot about the extent of the problems with this deal: 30 percent of you wrote in that "all of it" was the worst thing about the TPP!
We agree. Much about the TPP stinks. And we only highlighted a few of the most troubling sections:
Makes it easier for corporations to send our jobs overseas.
Jeopardizes our food safety inspections at the border.
Inadequate human rights protections for vulnerable populations in other countries.
Contains a section detailing environmental issues, but fails to even mention the words "climate change."
Potentially undermines consumer privacy protections for health and other personal data when it crosses borders.
Giveaways to big pharmaceutical corporations.
Allows corporations to challenge U.S. laws outside of U.S. courts, and demand taxpayer money if they win.
The voting might be over, but we all must continue working together to fight back against this terrible trade agreement.
