As you may have heard, Houston is voting on keeping HERO, a non-discrimination ordinance protecting 15 classes of people, most notably glbt's. Houston Equal Rights Ordinance. Opponents are spreading a Bathroom Hoax, namely that HERO would allow men to cross-dress and enter women's rooms for nefarious purposes. Not true.
Campaigns require money and volunteers. If you live in the Houston area, the campaign would love to have you blockwalking or phoning, needs you. If you want to do phoning, please bring your cell-phone and recharger.
Times and places below.
Many candidates have lined up for or against HERO. See another diary of mine about the Houston election in general.
Now suppose you live in Alaska or northern Maine. Does Houston matter? Big question: Are social issues still viable? Republicans would like to know. They will be watching Houston, and right-wing money will be coming in for this campaign from all over the country.
This is an opportunity for Houston Area Kossacks to build a reputation for providing volunteers for campaigns. If you are from Houston Area Kossacks, please let the campaign staff know.
This election is winnable but we must get our people out to vote. Houston frequently has low voter turnouts. That is why it is so important for you to volunteer.
Red HERO T-shirts have been available at the ACLU office, 1500 McGowen @ LaBranch (see below). T-shirts are a good way for you to display in public your support of a cause or candidate. They can be conversation-makers. 713-942-8146. "Darling if you want it come and get it. Better hurry 'cause it may not last."
