Received this e-mail today from Matt Dunne’s (D. VT) gubernatorial campaign:
Since we launched our campaign in October, we’ve been traveling the state discussing the issues impacting our communities: a crumbling middle class; rising poverty; and a gender wage gap that is hurting our families today and in retirement.
Thanks to your support and the momentum that you’re creating, we have an important announcement to share. Today, our campaign received the endorsement of the Executive Board of the Vermont State Labor Council AFL-CIO.
For generations, labor unions have made our country great. Unions are responsible for the minimum wage, the 40 hour work week, overtime pay, and America’s internationally admired middle-class.
Unfortunately, across the country labor unions are under attack. Public and private sector workers are being stripped of their rights to collectively bargain. In state after state, we have seen laws implemented that encourage the crossing of picket lines and have lowered the wages of millions of workers.
Our opponent, Phil Scott, recently indicated his support for draconian anti-union laws, just like union-busting Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
But in Vermont, we are headed in a different direction. Over the last several years, the Vermont Legislature has passed laws that strengthened unions’ ability to better protect workers.
We cannot allow our state to slip backward. That is why, if elected governor, we will beat back the national anti-union movement that has led to decades of wage stagnation and a declining middle-class.
Together we can create an inclusive economy that works for all Vermonters and all of Vermont.
In solidarity,
Matt
