admin first: we really really like hillary and tim, and there is no complacency here, we are confident. all are welcome to participate, but leave the pie at the door. tangents are always welcome, as well as rants about our “friends” on the other side of the aisle.

this morning's hnv - thanks violining
once upon a time, in a land far far away…
there was a man named ronald reagan. taking advantage of the disarray of his opponents, he was able to convince many from “the other side” to vote for him, and his shining city on a hill was a strong attractant. many people stayed on his side, even after he was gone. we know these as “reagan democrats”. the democratic party continued to be lost in the wilderness until a man from hope showed up.
fast forward to today. there is now a woman named hillary clinton. taking advantage of the historic disarray of her opponents, she is now convincing many from “the other side” to vote for her, even though she is running on an unabashedly liberal platform.
will we be able to look back on this point and say “hillary republicans”? i say yes. public opinion on many issues (guns, infrastructure, etc.) is pretty strongly on our side. i believe that once hillary gets many of these people to vote for us once, she can get them to do it again. but she needs our help for this in a few ways:
- we need to provide her with a congress that will work with her. not necessarily pass everything, but will work with her. yes, this means sucking it up and dealing with blue dogs, and offering moderate republicans cover from their crazy wing.
- we need to not denigrate moderate republicans who are considering voting for us. it doesn’t do much good to say, "sure, NOW you are catching on”. nobody likes to be made to feel stupid. feel free to denigrate non-moderates though. trump (and cruz, ftm) supporters are fair game.
- we need to realize that even with a cooperative congress, we are unlikely to get everything that every person might want, and to be honest, that is a good thing.
yes, i’m saying that hillary clinton really can be our ronald reagan. someone who brings a bunch of voters into the fold, and hangs onto them. 4 years of a strong economy driven by infrastructure and alternative energy, solid foreign policy, etc., coupled with 4 years of people actually experiencing hillary doing work would set up very well for the future.
pipe dream, some might say. i say look at the shift in societal norms and demographics. i say hillary has always been good at doing whatever job she has had, and impressed people on both sides of the aisle. i say that we have good workable policy ideas. i say that “america” has been taken back by the democratic party, and we have defined it in a way that many people are comfortable with.
i am confident we can do this.
this is your friday afternoon open thread. pop open a cold one, pour it in a 100% shattered glass, and have fun. enjoy the fact that we are winning.
