When actress Eva Longoria co-founded the Latino Victory Project in 2014, the political action committee focused on one thing: getting Latino politicians elected. Now with Trump about to take office they’re shifting their objective, BuzzFeed reports. During its short run the PAC has supported both Democratic and Republican Latinos, but no longer. They’re not just going to support any Latino candidate — they’re only going to be supporting progressives.
Latino Victory Project President Cristóbal Alex told BuzzFeed (emphasis mine):
Given the political climate and the policy priorities of our community, we’ve got to change. Because the Republican Party turned its back on us. We can’t negotiate with the white nationalists and racists that Trump has brought in.
Amen to that!
The group will throw itself into actively recruiting progressive Latinos to run for office at the state and local levels. Alex explains their shift is part of a conscious effort to place people with progressive values in power. The goal is to support individuals who won’t try to suck up to Trump (and thus normalize his behavior). Considering their numbers from the 2016 election, Trump better look out: the PAC raised $4.2 million and most of candidates they backed in the primary and general elections won their races.
