.“Let’s All Hate These People Because Maybe Hate is What We Need If We're Gonna Get Something Done.'" Donald J Trump actual quote
Trump. History does repeat itself. You said similar thing in 1989. You even took out a full page ad in 4 NY papers calling for "swifter Justice" and the death Penalty. Remember?
In 1989, after these black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were accused of assaulting and raping a white woman in Central Park, Mr. Trump spent $85,000 placing full-page ads in the four daily papers in New York City, calling for the return of the death penalty. “Muggers and murderers," Trump wrote, “should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes."
Incredibly, 14 years after their sentences were vacated based on DNA evidence and the detailed and accurate confession of a serial rapist named Matias Reyes, Mr. Trump has doubled down.
“They admitted they were guilty,” he said in a statement to CNN this month. “The police doing the original investigation say they were guilty. The fact that that case was settled with so much evidence against them is outrageous.”
Trump is apparently ignorant of our country’s epidemic of wrongful convictions, which disproportionately affect minorities, and the prevalence of false confessions in those convictions.
The fact they faced hours of intense interrogations with no lawyers present and often with no parent or guardian, even though they were just 14, 15 and 16 years old. They were denied food, drink and sleep over many hours, they were terrified.
The power imbalance in an interrogation room is extreme, especially when the suspects are young teenagers, afraid of the police and unfamiliar with the justice system or their rights.
The young men were all led to believe that they would be allowed to go home only if they said what the police wanted to hear. The four who gave statements admitted to having been present but blamed others for the rape, which they naïvely thought would not incriminate them.
But from the relative comfort of the Trump Towers, it may be hard to imagine understand from someone privileged, white, and rich and shielded.
Trump has also suggested that the teenagers were guilty of something that night because, as he wrote in an editorial for The New York Daily News in 2014, “these young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels.”
None of the Central Park Five had ever been arrested before. Trump’s reference to their pasts was an outright lie. Trump’s presumption that because they were black and brown teenagers from Harlem, they “must have committed a crime.”
Trump purchased full-page ads that ran in several New York City newspapers that read, “Bring Back the Death Penalty. Bring Back Our Police! “In the interview with Larry King, Trump defended the ads. “I don't see anything inciteful, I am strongly in favor of the death penalty," Trump told King. "I am also in favor bringing back police forces that can do something instead of turning their back because every quality lawyer that represents people that are trouble,(doesn’t your entire cabinet have criminal lawyers now?) The first thing they do is start shouting police brutality, etc."
The men were later exonerated in 2002, when another man confessed to the crime and DNA backed up his confession. Trump wrote an op-ed in the New York Daily News in 2014, calling New York City's $41 million settlement with the five men "a disgrace.’ “Of course I hate these people and let's all hate these people because maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done.'"
So you suggested that five teens who were abused and denied their right by police; who endured hunger, thirst, sleep deprivation, lack of parental and legal advice and counsel; who the district Attorney said convicted on lies and hate, were guilty because they were "black and brown" and "deserved to be put to death"? You encourage hate? "...because maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done?" The loss of their adulthood for a false conviction, and a settlement for the bad policing and fake confessions in 2014, in New York City's $41 million settlement with the five men was “a disgrace?"
Now you seem to want to flip flop on the Calling our justice system a "disgrace and laughingstock" and suggesting "you" may send him to Guantanamo Bay, instead of letting our justice system take its course. That was yesterday. Today you want "swift justice" and "the death penalty" once again?
This guy was a terrorist. Plain and simple. It didn’t matter if Trump was President or Obama was President. He planned and committed a terrorist act. Justice must be served. But Trump, justice is supposed to be blind. It’s not based on hate. It’s not based on emotion. It’s not based on wealth or status. It’s not based on your twisted views and beliefs (thank God!) It’s based on actual facts and truth.(Trump trolls take a minute and look those words up, as I know they are confusing to you) Wanting swifter justice and faster harsher punishment is Vigilante Justice, not American Justice. Vigilante Justice has been responsible for far too many deaths of innocent people in our past, than anything else.
In my hometown in the early 1900s, 3 black men were hung by vigilantes for a white girl who had had sex with her boyfriend and got caught after, by her parents. She chose to blame these three young black men, who she did know barely, rather than get her boyfriend in trouble. Vigilantes took them from the County sheriff’s jail and hung them from a tree in the downtown area. It became a party. Pictures taken, food sold, postcards made. All said "Justice served". After a few years of feeling guilt, the young white woman admitted her lie. Hate killed these young black men. Racism killed them. Not letting Justice be served, killed them. "Swift justice" killed them.
Trump needs to "keep his mouth shut", yet again. Every time he suggests our system isn’t fast enough or harsh enough or strong enough, he impedes the laws that WILL convict this terrorist. He gives defense lawyers a legitimate argument and an opportunity to show they can’t get a fair trial or fair sentence. Let justice take her course without your input. Don’t interfere or try and suggest bypassing our Constitution and rule of law, yet again. Law and order should never be based on hate. Hate gives you a 51 million dollar settlement and false convictions. Let this dirt bag have his day unimpeded. Let him show his ignorance and stupidity and false dogmatic beliefs unimpeded. Let’s show ISIS they failed. That our justice is blind and unyielding and brutally fair and unbiased. That religion, ideology, political beliefs and dogma don’t effect the outcomes or truths.
Prove to the world Trump, you understand the very Constitution you swore to defend (and apparently lied about it too). Just shut the hell up. You'll probably be impeached soon enough, we all pray daily anyway. You see, no one is truly above the law, NOT even you.
