Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D. MT):
I went to Montana public schools. My grandkids go to Montana public schools. My daughter is a Montana public school teacher. I taught music in public school and even served as school board chairman.
So I get pretty fired up when public education comes under attack.
In my view, the first priority of the U.S. Secretary of Education should be to improve public schools for all students. Unfortunately, the current nominee for Education Secretary -- Betsy DeVos -- does not seem to agree.
It’s clear after meeting with Mrs. DeVos and after hearing her testimony that she prioritizes private schools over public ones. This position puts students and Montana’s rural communities at risk. I believe strong public education is one of the cornerstones of our democracy--especially in rural states like ours. And I believe that a quality education shouldn’t only be available to the privileged.
After hearing from thousands of people in Montana, I cannot support her for Education Secretary.
Our public schools, whether they’re in New York City or Miles City, should provide all of our kids with the highest quality education and the fairest start in life.
Today I’m joining with Senator Tom Udall and Senator Angus King to stand up for public education in America -- and we’re asking for your support. Add your name to support public education >>
Thanks.
