Immediately following the November Elections, I swore to get more involved in local politics other than the bare minimum of “show up to vote”. I’ve been attending elected officials’ office hours, getting myself up to speed on local issues, and back in March I attended my first meeting of the local Democratic City Committee. I walked into a room full of friendly, enthusiastic people and felt at home, if a bit shy because I didn’t know anyone there really well. But I picked an auspicious day to begin attenting… who knew it was caucus night?! To make a long story short, it was the caucus to select delegates to the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention in June and as luck would have it, there were only three other people there from my Ward and we were entitled to send four to the convention. So here I am, ready to attend my first State Convention on Saturday! Grab something celebratory (or caffeinated) and join me below the fold after a word from our sponsor!

I admit it, I’m nervous. I’ve heard from many of you over the years how much fun this will be, and how necessary, but I have NO idea what to expect. This year is Platform year, so we’ll be voting on that. Actually it’s because it’s a Platform year and not a “Candidate” year that turnout was so low at the caucus meeting- another delegate told me that on even years, people show up at the caucus with friends in tow who NEVER attend other meetings, just to have enough to vote for them. They don’t think platform years ‘matter’. Me, I think platform matters a whole helluva lot. So to get people started with advice, here’s just a few of the questions banging on my brain for answers:
What do I wear?! (yes, inside I’m a 15yo worried about fitting in)
Do I sit with my fellow city delegates?
Should I be preparing for anything, other than reading the proposed platform?
What else does a n00b like me need to know?
All advice gratefully accepted, after you peruse what you REALLY came here for: the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that are the platform this community diary series rests upon. Thanks to my fellow Top Commenteer and dear friend, BeninSC for formatting goodness tonight!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

From Gwennedd:
Eric A Blair's funny riposte to my comment on typos is worthy of a TC submission.
It was in MTmofo's diary.
From BFSkinner:
This comment by Krotor sums up, in a point by point way what identity politics is. It was a very detailed and polite response.
From Jon Sitzman:
With this comment, MBNYC opines pithily on Sean Spicer's caricature of an address on Trump's disastrous foreign trip. You may want to squint a little, this one might scorch you on the way by.
Signal boost, please! Needs more eyes.
