“Rep. Devin Nunes stricken by political amnesia. Here’s proof.” heads the Fresno BEE’s front page today. The editor, Bill McEwen, begins:
I wonder if the secret health-care bill Mitch McConnell is writing up in the U.S. Senate covers amnesia. If it doesn’t, Rep. Devin Nunes will have to foot the bill himself – should he desire treatment.
What Nunes has forgotten are his own contributions to what he calls a level of civil discourse he’s never seen before.
To no one’s surprise, the congressman from Tulare pins the blame for the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise on the fiery rhetoric of Democrats and a mainstream press that Nunes says carries the water of left-wing causes without separating fact from fiction.
“It was almost predictable,” Nunes said Monday on KMJ radio’s Ray Appleton show.“I could tell by the amount of visceral emails and daily threats we still receive. I am worried for the country. This level of civil discourse – I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The editor asks if Nunes has forgotten the tone set by Donald Trump during the 2016 primary and general election:
Has he forgotten Trump’s mocking of opponents, peddling of disproved conspiracy theories and promise to pay the legal bills of people who forcibly removed protestors from his rallies?
Then he asks if Nunes has forgotten his own words, such as this “loaded, fact-free language”: In 2014 Nunes called Republican Justin Amash of Michigan “al-Qaida’s best friend in Congress.” In 2010 he said that two Democratic congressmen from the Central Valley were part of “this totalitarian regime in Washington. We know their votes are for sale, but we didn’t know for how much.” Also in 2010 he said that Nancy Pelosi and Rep. George Miller wanted to cut off Valley irrigation water because “they are radical environmental crazies.” In 2011 Nunes labeled as “eco-terrorism” the efforts to save fish in the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta. He also suggested that his constituents had been put into their "liberal concentration camp.” In his 2011 speech after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, Nunes said the Democratic majority had “subjected the American people to class warfare, anti-capitalist hate speech and vitriolic rhetoric.” Reporting that Nunes once likened Democratic water policies to those of Saddam Hussein, the editor exclaims: “Totalitarian? Votes for sale? Saddam Hussein?”
Nunes uses hysterical language at the drop of a hat… and testosterone-fueled words are a key ingredient in an image he has carefully cultivated. He’s fighting for farmers. He’s fighting against high-speed rail and the delta smelt. And if you’re a Republican, he’s protecting you from the big bad Democrats and the liberal press.
But, says the editor, Nunes is no “brawler” :
He prefers the comfort of news outlets that toss him softball questions and fundraisers where he can preach to the choir. His favorite reporters are stenographers. The last thing he relishes is a fair fight. He loves the power of congressional incumbency and his important position on the House Intelligence Committee. Most of all, he loves to unleash the flame-thrower that is his tongue.
The editor concludes by reminding us that “in Nunes’ world, people can’t have disagreements or honest differences of opinion. If you’re not on his side, you are the enemy,” or in Nunes’ words, “al-Qaida’s best friend.”
UPDATE 1/26/18: Rep. Devin Nunes, Trump’s stooge, attacks FBI
UPDATE: 1/26/18 The Republicans’ Real Fake Scandal In nearly every crime-caper movie there’s a shifty guy on the street corner who, seeing the cops in hot pursuit, flips over a fruit cart to slow them down and give the culprits a chance to get away. In Trump-era Washington, that role is being played with impressive conviction by Devin Nunes, the eight-term Republican representative from California and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. ….

UPDATE: 1/26/18 Nunes doing dirty work to help protect Trump
What, pray tell, does Rep. Devin Nunes think he’s doing by waving around a secret memo attacking the FBI, the nation’s premier law enforcement agency?
He certainly isn’t representing his Central Valley constituents or Californians, who care much more about health care, jobs and, yes, protecting Dreamers than about the latest conspiracy theory. Instead, he’s doing dirty work for House Republican leaders trying to protect President Donald Trump in the Russia investigation….
His performance as chairman of the highly sensitive House Intelligence Committee has been nothing short of embarrassing. Instead of taking Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election seriously and leading an impartial and bipartisan inquiry, Nunes has colluded with the White House. Last March, Nunes said he’d seen secret intelligence reports backing Trump’s claims that President Barack Obama had “wiretapped” his offices, but it turned out the documents came from the administration….
UPDATE: 12/31/17: Devin Nunes, targeting Mueller and the FBI, alarms Democrats and some Republicans with his tactics Even some of Nunes’s GOP allies have expressed concern about his tactics, prompting rare public warnings that he should temper his attacks on federal law enforcement.

UPDATE: 12/28/17 Nunes forgets roots; respect voters or get out
Letter to the editor, Fresno BEE:
It's time to consider voting out Rep. Devin Nunes for his next term due to his investigation of the FBI and the Department of Justice,. We all know that he is a lackey to Donald Trump. He refuses to meet with his constituents to explain what's going on in Washington, or our concerns, and he won't speak to the Bee. It appears that he is trying to obstruct justice by investigating the investigation of the FBI, to bring a close to the Russians and Trump.
Nunes appears to have his own agenda and seems to have forgotten whom he is supposed to represent. So when the time comes, please help replace Nunes with somebody who will represent us!
UPDATE: 11/06/17: Juan Williams: The shame of Trump's enablers
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) is the prime example of a politician abandoning an esteemed role on Capitol Hill to become a Trump stooge, gladly sinking in the morass of the president’s “alternative fact.” …….
UPDATE: 11/10/17 Devin Nunes attended a breakfast with Michael Flynn and Turkey's foreign minister just before the inauguration
Nunes' attendance at the event is newly relevant amid revelations that the special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating a meeting that another congressman, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, took with Flynn in September 2016. Flynn had begun lobbying on behalf of Turkish government interests one month earlier.
