About 290 million years ago, during a time period known as the Permian, a shark-like fish evolved with strange tooth whorls. This strange animal, known as Helicoprion (Greek for “spiral saw”) survived the Permian-Triassic extinction event of 250 million ago, but became extinct during the early Triassic.
At the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon, the work of artist Ray Troll shows what this extinct creature may have looked like.
