The Deschutes Historical Museum is located in the historic Reid School in Bend, Oregon. Among the many displays in the museum, is a display relating to the area’s timber industry.

Shown above is a Gunter Chain. This chain is 33 feet in length and is ½ a Gunter chain.
According to the Museum display:
“The Gunter chain was invented in 1620 by English mathematician Edmund Gunter. It became that standard unit for measuring land in England, and was the official unit for measurement in this country for many years. This chain gives a measurement in acre and mile increments. Measurements today are done in feet and inches with a steel tape or laser.”
Shown above are some blacksmithing tools. Blacksmithing was an important part of maintaining the large machinery and equipment at the sawmills.
