Okay, the power’s out. But you’re not powerless.
Repeat of some tips for being without power or nearby stores for days.
First, everyone should have
8+ gal. drinking water Store in large jugs in freezer NOW. Large block ice melts more slowly than cubes. Shift a jug at a time to fridge to keep perishables cool.
3+ 5-gal. buckets w/ lids to store tap water for washing/flushing
Canned, dried, packaged food for at least 1 week
cook stove and gas or Sterno and burner
flashlights w/ LOTS of batteries
solar yard lights (The solar powered yard lights from H. Depot, Harbor Freight, etc. can charge in the daytime after the rain’s gone and provide basic lighting inside all night. Also, nobody thinks to buy them all up in a prestorm rush.)
battery-op/crank-op/solar radio(s) and chargers
ANY medications you need for at least 1 week
First aid, analgesics and antibiotics
Booze and tobacco, coffee and tea, soft drinks (even if you're not a user, they are universal comforts and currencies)
These are just the very basics. There are many other items that come in really handy when the power goes out--and doesn't come back on for a good while. Rope, tools (with this storm, chain saw’s gonna be mighty handy), generator (and gas), camping gear, firearms, sheet plastic, bungee cords and duct tape.
The list of desired items will grow and become specific to your area and needs. The main point is:
In a few days, you may well be responsible for your own survival and maintenance, as well as that of your family and neighbors, for as much as a week, with no outside resources.
Please, get as prepared as you can now. Be your own first responder.
