A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
It’s winter. The days are short, the weather is raw, the streets are dank. If I could, I’d find a warm den and call it a year in November and set the alarm clock for the following March. Hibernation is rather appealing…1980’s style “cocooning”.
But for most, disappearing for a couple of months is not a realistic option. It is nice, of course, to surround yourself with things that make you happy and keep you entertained while the winds and the rain falls from a dark gray sky…with a vat of soup bubbling on the stove, or something baking in the oven. We create a general coziness around us as we escape the rest of the world for a few hours, and let it take care of itself for a while. And when you choose go out, it’s good that you’re with people you like, in comfortable settings.
Well, Wednesday I learned there is a term for sort of behavior, who knew. Hygge…A Danish life concept, pronounced “HUE-gah”
From the Oxford English Dictionary:
“A quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)”
Apparently Seattle has a lot of Hygge.
“Top Places” lists can be a bit of a joke, but sometimes you take your pride where you can.
According to Sperling’s Best Places, when it comes as to “hygge-ism”, Seattle is number 1…with Portland at number 2…take that “Stumptown”!
…The ranking factors are the number of cold or inclement days*; the amount of people who enjoy hygge pastimes, such as reading books, knitting and playing board games; the availability of venues for drinking coffee, tea, beer and wine; and the percentage of homes with a fireplace.
* Apparently having a cozy climate (aka crappy weather) is a big bonus as to getting a good grade for being a hygge-feeling town— sheesh!
The top 10 Hygge Cities:
- 1) Seattle - Top scores in Reading Books, Knitting/Needlework, and Cafes/Coffee Shops/Tea House. Also a high percentage of homes with a fireplace.
- 2) Portland - Among the best scores for both Hygge Pastimes and Hygge Venues. Top scores for Breweries and Wine Bars.
- 3) Minneapolis - Very Cozy Weather, as well one of the best scores in Hygge Pastimes like Reading Books, Card Games, and Knitting/Needlework.
- 4) Salt Lake City - The highest Hygge Pastimes score of the 50 Metro Areas included in the study. Board games, Card games, Cooking, and Knitting and Needlework are especially high.
- 5) Denver - A good number of Breweries, as well as residents who love to Knit/Needlework.
- 6) Rochester - Coziest Weather in the study. That is, cold, snowy, and dark.
- 7) Hartford - The weather is Cozy and its residents love their Knitting/Needlework.
- 8) Boston - Reading Books score is among the highest in the nation.
- 9) Cleveland - Among the coziest weather, as well as high scores for Knitting/Needlework.
- 10) Milwaukee - Cozy Weather and a high score for Hygge Pastimes, due to plenty of Card Games, Cooking, and Knitting and Needlework.
Here are the cities with the least of that hygge feeling…Sorry Los Angles. You have many qualities that I admire greatly, but when it comes to hygge-ness, you’re dead last!
- 46) Tucson
- 47) San Antonio
- 48) Miami
- 49) Riverside
- 50) Los Angeles

Please consider this diary to be a relaxing place on this “special’ anniversary. If you are marching, find a comfortable place to gather later with your friends. Share good talk, food and beverages afterward.
It’s 2018, lots to be done later, so...
