Exotic Vacation
We attend Netroots every year, but that isn’t exactly a vacation because it’s so srs. Now that we’re in our condo we have determined that with no farm responsibilities it’s time to take an actual vacation. We have never been to Hawaii so that seemed like a logical choice. Now I know it’s pretty exciting to be going to a foreign country like that. But our passports are up-to-date. Oh, wait, maybe we won’t even need passports.
Tut-tutting over the timing of Barack Obama’s family vacation, Cokie Roberts yesterday on ABC’s This Week added that Hawaii was not an appropriate destination: too foreign and too exotic. “I know Hawaii is a state, but …”
Now we are of an average demographic here in California, so we’ve asked family and most of our friends and relatives about Hawaii and are greeted with shocked replies; “You’ve never been? Impossible. Everyone’s been to Hawaii, many times as a matter of fact.” So not wanting to be left out of whatever mystique that exotic location holds, we have decided to go to Kauai this Spring. There’s much agreement among everyone that Kauai would be the best island to visit. My brother and sister-in-law were there recently and loved it, and they sent me a book detailing everything about the place.
We even have an invitation from a Kossack who lives there to visit his home. We’re thinking March or April. It was advised to avoid Spring break if possible, and that seems to be sound advice. We’re too old for rowdy.
Have you ever been to Hawaii? Kauai in particular? If so, do you have any advice for us? Even though I’m a guy, I sometimes take advice, though of course I’d much rather give advice. There are such activities as ziplines and helicopter rides. Would you do such frightening activities?
How about other vacation destinations. What would be your dream vacation….A) affordable and B) fantasy? Is a real vacation possible if you stay home? Any thoughts on this and, as usual, any subject (except for that one) are welcome at our Kitchen Table.
One more thing. Comcast remote now allows one to speak a song name and add “on YouTube” and it will play on your TV. I first tried it on Sultans of Swing, of course, but yesterday I called up this favorite:
There’s a singer giving 110%.
