When will Wittman denounce those who embrace hate?
Dr. King said, "There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right."
This quote, and many other words of wisdom he shared over the course of his life about equality and love, gives insight into what it means to be a true leader who acts in the name of justice for all. In recent months, we’ve seen an increase in recruitment activities for the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis throughout the 1st Congressional District of Virginia, yet my opponent, Rob Wittman, remains silent and refuses to disavow any association with Corey Stewart.
Stewart, who is associated with bigots and neo-Nazis, and has had members of his campaign staff linked to white supremacists, is running as the Republican candidate for Senate in Virginia. Corey Stewart also has friendly relationships with the organizers of the Unite the Right rally that brought significant unrest to Virginia and resulted in the death of Heather Heyer.
Yet, despite all of this and the fact that KKK flyers have been appearing within the 1st District over the past few months, Wittman declines to address Stewart and the hate he embraces. Sure, Wittman paid lip service to the KKK flyers, but he does nothing else. No one is too busy to say they will not campaign with a neo-Nazi sympathizer.
The reality is this – Rob Wittman is proud to campaign with Corey Stewart.
From the highway signs that stand beside each other to the joint campaign literature with both men smiling together, tells us that there is no daylight between the two of them. His silence speaks volumes and tells us where the Wittman-Stewart campaign stands on racism and hate.
